MC2 Post 1118 Much Much More than Just a Lowly Printer

The Smoking Gun of Printers and iPhones.

From The Press Usually Gets it Wrong Dept.

"Thinking....Where There's SMOKE
There's Fire!!!"

HP Douses Firebomb Printer Hack Threat

In a demo, Columbia University's Professor Salvatore Stolfo and Ang Cui show how it might be possible to instruct a hacked printer to overheat a component used to dry ink, causing paper to heat up and eventually smoke. In the demo a thermal switch caused the printer to shut down before a fire started, but the researchers reckon this too could be disabled, creating a possible mechanism for hackers to use vulnerable printers to start fires.

The security shortcoming stems from a failure to mandate digitally signed firmware updates sent to (at least older) printers...Pre-2009 HP Printers didn't have digitally signed firmware.

HP told MSNBC, which was the first to report the vulnerability, that its LaserJet printers have required digitally signed firmware updates since 2009. The printer giant said the researchers must have used older models.

MC2 Post 1117 More Tablets to Shake a Stick At

From:  http://www.engadget.com

Lenovo Unveils the LePad S2007 and LePad S2010, Both with Honeycomb and 1.5GHz dual-core chip

Oh no, it isn't just about the 5-inch tabletphone today. Announced at the same event in Beijing just now are a couple of larger
tablets from Lenovo: the LePad S2007 and the LePad S2010. Interestingly, the latter 10.1-inch device isn't quite the same as what we saw in our exclusive scoop from two weeks ago: it's 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core rather than 1.6GHz NVIDIA quad-core, 1GB RAM instead of 2GB, no funky fingerprint scanner on the back, and it's launching with Android 3.2 instead of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Gigabyte updates its netvertible range with the 11.6-inch Booktop T1132

The latest in its Booktop line of swiveling tablet hybrids is the T1132, which trumps the T1125 with a 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M processor and a GeForce GT520M GPU with 1GB and NVIDIA Optimus switching technology. You get one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, eSATA and HDMI on the 1.76kg (3.9-pound) lappie itself, but you can add more ports and an optical drive with the optional docking station. There's no indication as to availability or whether it'll cost more or less than the T1125's original $1300 asking price, but you could always try to snag a free one via Gigabyte's wanton Facebook bribery competition detailed after the break.

MC2 Post 1115 A Little Root Here A Little Hack There--It's All Good.

Root The Galaxy Nexus with Superboot

------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------

Usually, I cover This Subject (Hacking), in my LBK  (Linux by Knight blog).  But as Tablets and Smartphone have blurred the lines on what belongs where in Hardware devices.  The Software or Codebase that runs these devices has also Blurred.  Android, is kinda-open source and Apple is kinda-BeOS ala Coco based too!

So this hacking stuff, which has been approved (not by Apple of Course) ,on Apple's smartphones ( I run a hacked iPod Touch thank you), should extend to Android Devices as well.

My Opinion...

Its a boot.img file that will run on bootup and install su and superuser apk without the need of ADB.

Install Android Honeycomb 3.2
On Your Laptop/ Eee Pc

From:  http://www.helloandroid.com

If you haven’t heard of an open source project called Android-x86 then you should check it out. It aims to get Android up and running on your laptops, desktops PC’s and to port Android open source project to the x86 platform.

Well, we now have almost full functional builds of Android 3.2 Honeycomb booting and running various systems.

Video on YouTube:  http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZBl7QMKedFY?version=3

The whole process involves a few simple steps really and they include – Downloading the Android ISO, then via using UNetbootin you install it’s image to a USB stick drive or a SD Card. Following on you then have

Honeycomb up and running via one of those two options. The most luck is with the old ASUS Branded products especially the old Eee Pc’s, Wi-Fi is working, Bluetooth, and a lot more, even the Android Market has been able to be installed.

Dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos ARM CPU

MC2 Post 1114 Why Netbooks AND Tablets Should Become Real Cheap Real SOON

The Scramble To Keep a Viable Market Between the Desktops
and the Smart Phones

From:  http://m.zdnet.com

2012: Year of the Ultrabook

What is an Ultrabook? According to Intel, who trademarked the term, the Ultrabook is a laptop that:

is less than 20mm (0.8 inches) thick
    has no optical drive
uses a solid-state drive (SSD) for all storage
    uses a Core i5, i7 processor
weighs less than 1.4 kg (3.1 lbs.)
yields 5 - 8+ hours of battery life
    priced around $1,000

PC laptop makers realize they must do something to kickstart the Ultrabook category, and it is reported that at least 50 different models will debut at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in January.

It sounds like the Ultrabook will be the big thing at the CES in 2012, compared to netbooks and tablets in recent years.

It is good that so many companies are looking to produce Ultrabooks, as that will drive prices down. While

Ultrabook makers may have a hard time competing with Apple currently, if prices drop enough next year that will surely change. Intel is predicting 40 percent of all laptops sold will be Ultrabooks by the end of 2012.

I Guess It Is Black Friday Everywhere !!!

Thousands queue in Indonesia to
Buy New Blackberry

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Thousands of Indonesians jammed into a glitzy shopping mall Friday to get hold of the first BlackBerry Bold 9790s being sold worldwide.

Fearing a riot, hundreds of police were deployed outside,
tying up traffic in the heart of the capital for hours.

With a 50 percent discount on the $540 phone for the first 1,000 buyers, lines started forming in front of Pacific Place mall on Thursday night. By daybreak, impatient shoppers started rattling the gates.

And when rumors spread that the new smartphones — commonly known as Bellagio — had already sold out, the
crowd of 3,000 went crazy. Several people fainted in the crush.

Indonesia, a nation of 240 million people, has experienced a come-from-nowhere tech frenzy in recent years.

How to Check What Your Computer is Connecting To

So, how do you find out what the problem is? There is an easy method using the netstat command from a command prompt window. This works with Windows 7, Vista, and XP. If you’re still using XP, make sure you are running at least Service Pack 2.

We will use the netstat command to generate a list of everything that has made an internet connection in a specified amount of time. To use the netstat command, you must run the command prompt window as administrator. Open the Start menu and enter “cmd.exe” in the Search box. When the results display, right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as administrator from the popup menu.

MC2 Post 1109 Dealing with the Morning Squawkers

RE: Java, Nokia, Open Office and of course
All Things Adobe

I've been trying to move to Chrome for some-time-now, but since I use a "shared" home computer I haven't been able to do it yet.

If Chrome was a bit more novice-friendly and if my personal tab bar and Bookmarks gotten so out of hand, I'd move to Chrome in a flash.  Gee, I wish I hadn't said That.

Adobe is one of those morning Squawkers driving me
to the Brink.

Others in this rogues gallery include: Java, Nokia, Open Office and Adobe's Flash Player which really cool new websites

refuse to believe this is Pretty-Old-Bloated-Software
that should be Deep-Sixed.

Didn't you believe Steve Jobs when he refused to HAVE IT (Adobe) ON THE IPHONE a few years ago?

Don't you realize "HacKers" (the Bad Kind) just love to mess with these programs that are constantly
needing to be UPDATED!

And if You-Miss-One, you may be asking for trouble.

Chrome (selling point), does this for you automatically.  Makes sure you're running the latest Patched Version of Adobe's best-loved hackers target.

Life would be so much easier if these really needed updates took place when needed instead of The-Second-Tuesday of the Month.

If you were a hacker, when would you
let malware loose? I'd worry about the Wednesday After-the-Second Tuesday!

For the Present, longing for a better, safer Web with Chrome When-Needed auto-updater, Keep strict control of Timely Updates.

The Wingman.
