Vizio hacks prices on select HDTVs prior to Black Friday

by Darren Murph, posted Nov 26th 2008 at 7:03PM

We've already seen that a number of retailers will be offering Vizio HDTVs on the cheap this Friday (or Black Friday, as the in-crowd calls it these days), but the company is stealing a bit of their thunder by announcing cuts from the top a few days early. Vizio's 19-inch VA19 LCD will be offered for just $199.99 at Costco through December 7th , while the 32-inch VP322 plasma (pictured) will go for $437 at Walmart starting today. There's also the 37-inch VW37 LCD HDTV for $499.99 at Costco, the 32-inch 1080p VOJ32LF LCD for $559.99 at Sears and the 42-inch 1080p VS420 for $698 at Sam's Club. If none of these sets float your boat, check out our condensed guide to Black Friday: HD style for something more to your liking.

I've been Touched by the Hand of Apple???

iPod Touch (the real Name)

Last Saturday, I went off to Best Buy, reached deep into my pocket and pulled out my Credit Card and told the clerk to give me one of them "Touchy" things.

She brought out a box slightly bigger than a vertical deck of cards.

I said, "Is that it?"

She nodded.

She could tell I was expecting a little more for my money.

"How about a carrying case?"

I stammered, "Yeah, that might not be a bad idea."

Out the door and home to power up this baby.

After close to thirty years in computers, I felt like I felt when I bought my first Radio Shack Color Computer in the 80's.

I felt like a newbie, Exploring a Brave New Frontier.

I didn't even have a PC or Apple computer at home to charge it with. I was thinking I could do that at work on Monday, if I could wait that long.

I couldn't.

My son fired up an old Windows XP that was gathering dust in the "Computer Room".

We both had migrated after years of Windows frustration, to Linux and the Fedora Distro.

After a few hours of work with the XP workhorse of old and cleaning up enough space on the drive to import my music and video collection.

And the iTunes program.

The iPod Touch, that the clerk said had at least 25% batter power, was less than that and I plugged in the usb connector to charge this baby up.

The sucker is a bona fide technological marvel. A perfect marriage of technology and usability.

No wonder these things are flying off the shelves.

The reporters tell us 7.1 Million iPhones sold in the last quarter.

More to say, but I've got to get back to playing with my New Toy.

Wingman, a kid again.

Saturday night, I went to sleep at 3:30 in the morning...

Bad "Economic Issues" is forcing many retailers to take matters into their own hands, and began Pre-Black Friday Sales last weekend. Walmart and K Mart had "Black Friday, Saturday and Sundays" with big cuts in Flat screen HD tvs, laptop computers and Playstation 2 and 3's special sales.

Even Apple is expecting rival PC vendors will be offering deep-cuts on the "REAL" Black Friday and Apple will counter with deeper-than-deep (read:"blacker than black:) cuts on a number of Mac models.

Sony's New 3rd Gen eInk eBook.

from MobileTechReview.com

===========================

Available for $399.00 at Amazon, and sporting a spiffy Touch-Screen and SD memory slot, the next-gen Sony eBook was Almost a Winner.

The down side, according to reviewers is the Text Contrast, which is worse than the previous model PRS-500, which many complained about. The added touch-screen layer didn't help things...

Too bad Sony; and you seemed soooo close.

How the Old Bush Campaign Administration Destroyed CNN.

======================================
======================================

Ted Turner must be doing flip-flops.

The Network News Channel that was the Awe of every serious news agency has become Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Full of Sound and Fury, signifying nothing..".

Even the Pop Rock Group: Talking Heads had something to say.

CNN was based on the idea of reporting the NEWS, and has become a political grifter and drifter, and reporting Opinions, and Questions Without Answers.

Don't we get enough of that from political campaigns?

Newspapers are dying on the Vine right and left and the advertisers are Flocking to Cable on its road to the Internet.

What CNN got wrong, is the Idea that More is Better than Good.

What used to be a Great News Organization has become an institution that will throw anything against the Wall to see what sticks.

Remember when Ed Asner asked Ted on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, "You want to be a Quiz Master???" "A Quiz master??"

Obviously the Heads at CNN never saw that Show.

Even Johnny Carson, the comedian, on the Tonight Show, did Better Interviews, because he "listened to the answers".

Nobody listens on CNN anymore. They just Talk.

It's also one of Few "News" providers that show re-runs.

"News" Reruns, now that makes no sense.

Maybe they should look up the word: NEWS?

That was what the second "N" stood for, wasn't it?

Maybe not...

Wingman voting, in spite of CNN.

Slashdot: Why Netbooks will soon Cost $99 Bucks...Thank You iPhone.

THE Three NETBOOKS:

============================================
SLASH.DOT says: "Why Netbooks will Soon Cost $99 Bucks"

============================================
LINK: http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/01/056247&from=rss
============================================

"netbooks like the Asus Eee PC, the Dell Mini 9 and the HP 2133 Mini-Note will soon cost as little as $99. The catch? You'll need to commit to a two-year mobile broadband contract. The low cost will come courtesy of a subsidy identical to the one you already get with your cell phone. It's likely that HP is working with AT&T (they're reported to be talking), which announced a major strategic shift a couple of weeks ago that should result in AT&T stores selling nonphone gadgets that can take advantage of mobile broadband, including netbooks. What's more interesting is that low income and cheapskate buyers are starting to use iPhones as replacements or substitutes for netbook, notebook and even desktop PCs. The author's take: A very large number of people are increasingly looking to buy a single device — or, at least, subscribe to a single wireless account — for all their computing and communications needs, and at the lowest possible price."

Wingman's Take:
==========
A lot of what the author cites rings true. Check out previous post here about "Low Income Buyers Gobbling Up iPhones". And subsidizing low-price entry-point seems to have traction too.

Interesting Premise.
