MC2 Post 829 The King Is China's New World's Fastest Computer

World's Fastest Supercomputer
Makes Debut in China

China has knocked the US off the Top Spot with the unveiling of a the most powerful
Supercomputer in the world.

=======================

Now fully operational, it has set a new performance record of 2.507 petaflops, as measured by the LINPACK benchmark. It combines massively parallel GPUs with multi-core CPUs, and is based on 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 CPUs.

The announcement marks the end of the US' dominance in supercomputing. The record was previously held by the AMD Opteron-based Cray XT5 Jaguar at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

As well as cutting down on size, the use of GPUs cuts the system's power requirements dramatically. While a 2.507 petaflop system built entirely with CPUs would consume over 12MW, Tianhe-1A consumes only 4.04MW.

MC2 Post 828 WHEN Can We Get 1 Gbps on DSL

Vendors Closing in On 1 Gbps

Using DSL

DSL vendors are using a variety of methods such as bonding several copper lines, creating virtual ones and using advanced noise cancellation to increase broadband over copper to several hundred megabits per second.

At the Broadband World Forum in Paris, Nokia Siemens Networks became the latest vendor to brag about its copper prowess. It can now transmit speeds of up to 825M bps over a distance of 400 meters, it said on Monday.

400 meters = 437.444 Yards

Apple To Remove Java from Mac OS X?

============================================

After the news that the new MacBook Airs do not ship with Flash pre-installed (which is news considering Flash has been part of Mac OS X for a very long time), we now have news that Apple is also taking what appears to be the first steps towards removing Apple's own Java runtime from Mac OS X.

The wording is a tiny little bit ambiguous, but it would seem like Apple is preparing to ditch Java as a standard part of Mac OS X. In the 'new and noteworthy' section of the release notes for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, they note the deprecation of Java.

"As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated," Apple notes, "This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X. The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products."

The devil is in the details here. Apple produces its own Java runtime, and it's that one that's facing the chopping board, but as you can see, it may be removed from future releases. The Cocoa bindings were removed some time ago.

As far as I know, there's no alternative at this point, so I'm not sure what would your options would be if Apple did remove the runtime altogether.
