MC2 Post 1771 The "Crowd" That Has Money to Invest IS Doing It

Taking stock of 2013′s crowdfunded

Linux devices

What’s the latest status on all those cool embedded Linux and Android Kickstarter and Indiegogo projects of 2013? Most are moving forward, but delays are a common problem.

Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have emerged over the last two years as a prime launch path for embedded Linux and Android devices. Sometimes it’s hard to decide when to cover these products: when they first launch, or only when they’ve reach their funding goals?

Here at LinuxGizmos, we’ve done a bit of everything, including covering products before they’ve entered funding, or waiting to see if a product actually emerges. The following blurbs provide the latest updates on every product we’ve covered that went through a Kickstarter or Indiegogo funding round in 2013.

MC2 Post 1770 Three New Bumps For the Road Ahead

New Geeksphone to run Android
and Firefox OS on x86

From:   http://linuxgizmos.com

Mozilla’s hardware partner for unlocked Firefox OS phones revealed that it is prepping a new phone that will run both Android and Firefox OS, on an Intel processor.

Not much was heard this month from the early leader in the new wave of mobile Linux operating systems, Firefox OS. However, on Dec. 20, Spanish hardware designer Geeksphone, which has previously introduced the Peak, Peak+, and Keon phones running Firefox OS, tipped a new phone called the Revolution that it will “market” in the first quarter of 2014. The Revolution will ship with Android, but also supports Firefox OS, and other presumably Linux-based “alternatives.”

Now, the project has released a developer preview of a version of Ubuntu that lets you dual-boot Android 4.2 or higher and the Ubuntu Touch UI at the click of an icon.

MC2 Post 1769 Learning How to Ride The Rails of the RUBY Express

Ruby on Rails Tutorial
Learn Web Development with Rails
Michael Hartl

This Free Tutorial has been called one of the best for learning a difficult set of 'programs' for Web Development.

From:   http://ruby.railstutorial.org

=========================================
=========================================
Unless otherwise noted, you should use the exact versions of all software used in the tutorial, including Rails itself, if you want the same results. Sometimes minor version differences will yield identical results, but you shouldn’t count on this, especially with respect to Rails versions. The main exception is Ruby itself: 1.9.3 and 2.0.0 are virtually identical for the purposes of this tutorial, so feel free to use either one.

Rails Installer (Windows)

It's Best to Run both Ruby and Rails on an Apple or Linux Machine.  If you must use a Windows Platform, then you can best run Ruby and Rails in a Virtual Machine  (like  Oracle's VM VirtualBox) running almost any recent Distro of Linux.  It plays nicer there.

MC2 Post 1768 Is It TIME for Another Netflix Blinge ???

Cruise and Gibson  GONE!

"Like Pages in a Book..."

*Scene

'Top Gun' and 'Braveheart' among movies disappearing from Netflix on January 1st

From:  http://www.theverge.com

Over the years, Netflix's customers have grown accustomed to a revolving selection of movies and TV shows. The company's licensing deals often result in some films disappearing after spending time in Netflix's streaming library. Unfortunately, it looks like the beginning of 2014 will mark the end of  Watch Instantly rights for dozens of popular titles including Top Gun, Braveheart, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Netflix displays an "expiration date" whenever content is added to your personal queue, but the company has made it difficult to monitor those losses on a larger scale.

Thankfully some Redditors have proven up to the task; they've assembled a list of notable titles that are due to be removed as we ring in 2014. The entire casualty list — which also includes Being John Malkovich, Titanic, Platoon, and Born on the Fourth of July — can be viewed in full here, meaning the VERGE's Page on the List...

Apple Mac Pro review (2013)

Apple released an updated version, and it addresses a little more than just the wireless card and I/O options. Redesigned from the ground up, it's now much smaller and lighter, with a space-age cylindrical shape, an overhauled cooling system that's half as loud and a spec sheet that includes standard dual GPUs, PCIe SSDs, 802.11ac WiFi, up to 64GB of RAM and the latest Intel Xeon processors, once again going up to 12 cores.

In short, these are specs that bring the Mac Pro into the modern age -- and make it ready to handle
the coming onslaught of 4K content.

MC2 Post 1766 A Soon as a MP Chip become "The Hot Chip" in Cell Phones

Someone Adapts it  for SBC and of course Linux.

Why?

Simple.

Linux is Open Source and pretty darn
Stable And Powerful.

It's also a primary choice for Big Boxes aka

 SuperComputers.

$59 Open SBC runs Linux on Quad-Core Exynos

From:   http://linuxgizmos.com

Hardkernel and its community Odroid project have announced an open-hardware single board computer based on Samsung’s quad-core 1.7GHz Exynos 4412 Prime SoC.

The Odroid-U3 is claimed to be “100 percent software compatible” with the Odroid-U2 that began shipping in Dec. 2012 and is now being discontinued. As with other Odroid SBCs, the U3 runs a variety of Linux OSes including Android, and is supported with discussion forums, schematics, source code, and documentation available at the Odroid open hardware community website.

In comparison to the older Odroid-U2, the Odroid-U3 SBC offers three, rather than two, USB Host ports. It also adds a small 8-pin I/O header with UART, IRQ, I2C, and GPIO signals, plus DC power. The new I/O header lets the Odroid-U3 stack with like-sized I/O expansion boards, such as the Odroid-U3 I/O Shield shown below.

MC2 Post 1765 BlackBerry Will Try to Stay Mobile while Analysts Scratch Heads

BlackBerry posts 3Q loss of $4.4B.

From:   http://www.tri-cityherald.com

BlackBerry also announced Friday that it's entering into a five-year partnership with Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that assembles products in vast factories in China.

Foxconn, known for its manufacturing contract work on Apple's iPhones and iPads, will jointly design and manufacture most BlackBerry devices and manage inventory of the devices in an agreement that will offload much of BlackBerry's manufacturing costs.
