C2 Post 1863 This Is The Wrong Time to have the drippy-sneezes -- The Wrong Time!

At Least it didn't happen when Bob and Ann (and Chuck, Thea

and Nerenya) were in SoCal for a quick visit...

But once they left, it swooped down on me like Feliciano's

Turkey Buzzard.  How I hate that song...

On so Many Levels.

MC2 Post 1862 Apple Cuts Purchase Price of Beats

From:  http://nypost.com

Apple’s biggest deal in its history just got a little cheaper.
The tech titan is expected to announce its acquisition of Beats Electronics this week — at the slightly reduced price of $3 billion, The Post has learned.

A report in the Financial Times earlier this month tipping the deal put the price at $3.2 billion.

Steve Ballmer Said To Offer $1.8 Billion
For Los Angeles Clippers

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has offered $1.8 billion for the Los Angeles Clippers, according to a person familiar with Ballmer’s interest in the NBA team. Ballmer, who retired as Microsoft’s CEO four months ago, has a net worth of $20 billion. Another source, with intimate knowledge of the bids that Rochelle Sterling has thus far received for the basketball team, said offers have come in between $1 billion and $2 billion and that the Ballmer package is strong.

Linux for Massive Server Deployments

CoreOS enables warehouse-scale computing on top of a minimal, modern operating system.

From:   https://coreos.com/

CoreOS is a new Linux distribution that has been rearchitected to provide features needed to run modern infrastructure stacks. The strategies and architectures that influence CoreOS allow companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter to run their services at scale with high resilience. We've implemented them correctly so you don't have to endure the slow, learn-as-you-go infrastructure building process.

CoreOS can run on your existing hardware or on most cloud providers. Clustering works across platforms, making it easy to migrate parts of your gear over to CoreOS, or to switch cloud providers while running CoreOS.

Google Project Tango Tablet: Think 3D

Google prepares to add tablets to devices that might
use its 3D mapping system to enrich commerce,
gaming, and more.

Google reportedly is developing a 7-inch tablet that incorporates Project Tango, the company's experimental 3D space modelling technology.

The company plans to make about 4,000 Project Tango-enabled tablets starting next month, according to The Wall Street Journal, equipped with a set of sensors and electronics similar to those in its Project Tango phones: a depth sensor, two cameras, gyroscopes, orientation sensors, and a vision-processing system.

MC2 Post 1858 Reconnecting to the ISEE-3 Sun-Earth Explorer 3

That we sent on a wild Goose Chase in

1985 and 1986

A hardy little spacecraft is about to come home after an incredibly long journey and an unexpected mission it had not been built for. As it flies by Earth next month, scientists will have a brief window to attempt to communicate with the vintage NASA craft and put it back to work on its original mission.

Because of a tight budget, NASA couldn’t muster the resources to make this revival happen. So, a group of citizen scientists stepped forward to take on the challenge. Yesterday, NASA officially endorsed the group, known as the the ISEE-3 Reboot Project, and signed a space act agreement giving it the go ahead to try to bring back to life a mission that started during the Carter Administration.

I came to know through a social network (I have many colleagues as friends there, and they usually post more
useful stuff than cute kittens) that ATLAS has launched a very intriguing competition. One you can participate to,
if you have some programming skills; no knowledge of
particle physics is needed.

Don't Pass GO to Get Started.

(heh, heh just kidding.........)

Go starting kit

Go is a statically-typed programming language (like C/C++) with concurrency builtins to ease coding.

The kit provided here (courtesy of Sébastien Binet, LAL) is the simplest one using Go and nothing else (heavily based on the simplest python kit). It makes a simple window selection on just one variable.

MC2 Post 1857 It's Been Over 30 years and We Still Play the Same Games

Users can play with the doodle version of the Rubik's Cube on Google's homepage today. Screengrab: WIRED

How Google Built Its 3-D Interactive Rubik’s Cube Doodle

From:   http://www.wired.com

Google launched one of its coolest doodles yet: a 3-D interactive Rubik’s Cube.

Built thanks to advances in CSS and a few smart design tricks, it’s one of the most challenging doodles the company has done so far. It’s also one of the most well-timed. May 19—5/19—honors the roughly 519 quintillion possible configurations of the iconic puzzle.

In the 14 years since Google began posting them, doodles have celebrated everything from cultural milestones to significant inventions. Two years ago music lovers went nuts when the company posted a fully-playable Moog doodle, and in 2010 videogame fans got a chance to enjoy a round of Pac-Man on the Google homepage to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary.

==========================================
==========================================

In addition to the main doodle, Google is also making the source code available for anyone interested in remixing it. The company is also launching a handful of interactive, digital Rubik’s Cubes as a Chrome Experiment, as well as partnering with Liberty Science Center for a live interactive exhibit on the Cube, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

MC2 Post 1856 The Real George Goes Old School in word processors

Recently on Conan, George R.R. Martin

Drops a Bombshell.

George R.R. Martin Writes on a DOS-Based Word Processor

From the 1980s

From:  http://www.slate.com

George R.R. Martin knows what's up. He's been writing science fiction and fantasy for decades, so he's not going to waste time trying to get Microsoft Word to understand that the House of Targaryen and cities like Qohor and Asshai are all things he means to type. In an interview with Conan O'Brien on Tuesday he laid it all out. "I hate spell-check, yes," he said.

And his late-’80s software of choice is the classic word processor

WordStar 4.0.

4.0 was the second WordStar version to work on DOS, but was a rewrite of 3.0, which had been directly ported to DOS from CP/M. Martin says that to this day it fulfills his every writing need.
