MC2 Post 1223 Get MAD for the iPad -- Tomorrow -- Tomorrow No Foolin'

===================================

MAD for the iPad

Just in time for April Fools' Day, the iconic

humor magazine MAD

gets its first dedicated iPad app

===================================

Not available until Sunday, which is known to watercooler comedians as both April Fools' Day and the birthday of MAD mascot Alfred E. Neuman, the MAD app might surprise you: it's not a waste of time.

Guarantees against it insulting your intelligence,
however, have yet to be made.

The app itself will be free and offer some free content, although full issues of MAD will cost you. New issues of MAD run $4.99 in the app, while back issues go for $1.99. Unlike DC's Comixology-powered app for its comic books, the MAD app, developed by 1K Studios, will offer digital subscriptions for $1.99 per issue or $9.99 per year. Current print subscribers will automatically get a free digital subscription.

MC2 Post 1235 Science And Apple Keeps Pushing the Envelope

Honeycombs of Magnets could Lead to New Type of Computer Processing

From:  http://www.physorg.com

Scientists have taken an important step forward in developing a new material using nano-sized magnets that could ultimately lead to new types of electronic devices, with greater capacity than is currently feasible, in a study published today in the journal Science.

(PhysOrg.com) -- Since its discovery in 2004, graphene -- sheets of carbon an atom thick -- has sparked a flurry of research into the nanomaterial's potential applications for blazing fast, tiny electronics.

Now, several research groups claim to have created analogous thin sheets of silicon called silicene, igniting a controversy over who won the race to synthesize this promising new material.

MC2 Post 1234 Researcher Publishes Specs for Real Linux-Powered Star Trek Tricorder

From:  http://arstechnica.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Star Trek tricorder has become a reality, thanks to the hobby project of a cognitive science researcher. Dr. Peter Jansen has developed a handheld mobile computing device that has a number of sophisticated embedded sensors. The device is modeled after the distinctive design of the 24th-century tricorder.

He began working on the project in 2007 and aims to make it easy for others to reproduce his designs. He has made complete schematics for two of his four models available under the terms of the TAPR non-commercial hardware license. The underlying source code of the device's software environment is available under the GPL. In a blog post about the project, Jansen explained that he hopes his project will encourage scientific curiosity and help people better understand the world.

MC2 Post 1223 James Cameron Dives To Deepest Point On Earth In Submarine

'Avatar', Titanic Director Plunges to

35,756 feet in the Pacific Ocean.

Director James Cameron has scaled the heights in Hollywood with mega-smashes including "Titanic" and "Avatar."
Hell, he even once described himself as "king of the world" at the Oscars.

But on Sunday, the oceanographic nut reached new depths when he piloted his custom one-man submarine to the deepest point in the world's oceans by hitting 35,756 feet in the Mariana Trench, southwest of Guam, according to National Geographic. Following seven years of preparation for the dive, and a few days cooling his heels to wait for bad weather to pass, Cameron pulled the feat off at 2:52 p.m. Pacific time and then shared the historic news on Twitter.

"Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good," Cameron tweeted after the two hour and 36-minute descent that took him 6.8 miles deep. "Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you @DeepChallenge."

'Mad Men' Spoiled Bastard:
Episodes 1 & 2: 'A Little Kiss.'

The Times They are a-changing. So Let's Dance!

This two-hour episode will probably go down in Mad Men history as the “Zoo Be Zoo Be Zoo” episode (and we’ll leave it to you to decide if Jessica Pare has the Sophia Loren facial similarities that probably sprung the idea to cover
the song into Matthew Weiner’s head).

That party scene says more about where Mad Men is now than words ever could.

MC2 Post 1228 Fusion Power--The Promise--and One Stumbling Block Passed.

 Record-Breaking Laser Pulse Boosts

Fusion Power Hopes

One Giant Step towards 'Creating a Miniature

Star on Earth'

From:  http://www.theregister.co.uk

The world's most powerful laser has fired a record-breaking pulse that exceeded even its own design goals.

For 23 billionths of a second, the 192 ultraviolet lasers in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) generated the equivalent of 411 trillion watts of peak power, which the NIF described as being 1,000 times more energy than the entire US uses "at any instant in time".

The shaped laser pulse delivered a staggering 1.875 million joules of energy into the NIF's facility's target chamber center – and that was after the pulse traveled through diagnostic instruments and other optics on its journey to the target.
