Gionee Elife E7 Boasts Most Sensitive
16MP Camera

From:   http://www.engadget.com

Gionee isn't exactly a name that you'd come across in the Western market every day, but this time, the Chinese company has big global ambitions.

The latest proof is its Elife E7, a 5.5-inch 1080p Android phone that boasts two titles:  it's the first known phone featuring the 2.5GHz flavor of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chip
(MSM8974AC); plus it has the most sensitive 16-megapixel camera, courtesy of its Largan M8 lens (though the aperture is still unknown) and 1/2.3-inch sensor with large 1.34µm pixels. Compared to the competition, Gionee believes this particular
OmniVision sensor has the best balance between resolution and pixel size, and the phone maker even went as far as claiming this already beats the 1.12µm, 16-megapixel counterpart on the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S 5.

Liquid Metal Printer Lays Electronic Circuits
on Paper, Plastic, and Even Cotton

One of the dreams of makers the world over is to be able to print electronic circuits on more or less any surface using a desktop printer. The great promise is the possibility of having RFID circuits printed on plastic or paper packaging, LED arrays on wallpaper and even transparent circuits on glass. Or simply to rapidly prototype circuits when designing new products.

From:    http://www.technologyreview.com

Until now. Today, Jing Liu and pals at the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry in Beijing say they’ve worked out how to print electronic circuits on a wide range of materials using an inkjet printer filled with liquid metal. And they’ve demonstrated
the technique on paper, plastic, glass, rubber, cotton cloth and even an ordinary leaf.

MC2 Post 1752 Solar Cells Get Down to Pop Music

From:   http://physicsworld.com

It is not just humans who respond to motivational music. Researchers in the UK have discovered that blasting beats at zinc-oxide solar cells makes them perform up to 50% better. According to the researchers, pop and rock music gets the cells going more than classical music, but they suggest that any noise with a broad range of frequencies will produce similar effects. The discovery might be exploited by placing the devices on top of buses, air-conditioning units and in other noisy spots.

Does the Positron 'excess' really Exist?

The positron “excess” measured by two independent space missions and linked by some physicists to dark matter or pulsars does not exist, according to new theoretical work done by an international team of researchers. Instead, the researchers have calculated a "robust" upper limit for the positron flux created via interactions of high-energy cosmic rays with ambient gas in the galaxy and say that the flux measured by the Payload for Antimatter/Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) experiment and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) lies below this limit.

How to watch a Bose–Einstein Condensate
for a  Very Long Time

A new way of making measurements on Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) has been

proposed by physicists in the UK and Australia. Calculations made by the team suggest that the technique could allow researchers to monitor BECs over much longer timescales than the several seconds possible today. If successfully implemented in the lab, the process could increase the use of BECs in practical applications such as atomic clocks and accelerometers.

A BEC is created by holding atomic gas in a magnetic trap and cooling the gas to nanokelvin temperatures

MC2 Post 1751 Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide 2013: Tablets

From:   http://www.engadget.com

Tablets are right up there with 3D-enabled 4K TVs in terms of gift appeal; no one can resist firing them up the moment they've been unwrapped. Maybe it's their super-thin form factors; maybe it's because they make great couch companions; or maybe it's because they're just plain fun. Whether it's an Android, Windows 8.1 or iOS slate you're shopping for, you'll find suitable picks across all budgets below.

Android 5.2.27 Slowly Rolling Out
[APK Download]

From:   http://www.androidpolice.com

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Google is quietly rolling out an update to YouTube for Android with version 5.2.27 on top of the current version 5.1.10. If you're eager to install it right now, we have some download links towards the end of the post.

What’s new?

While 5.2.27 does have a whole bunch of changes under-the-hood which are mostly related to the upcoming offline download support, there are, surprisingly, no UI tweaks and new features that you can dive into right now.Usually, when we see an app go from X.1 to X.2, there is at least something new to play with, but after looking at every screen I could think of, I saw nothing. Outside of the existing and pretty much broken preloading of videos in subscriptions and the Watch later list, offline support that is supposed to let us cache videos for up to 48 hours without a working Internet connection is currently still MIA. Perhaps Google will be able to flip the switch server-side and turn it on in November, or maybe there will be a follow-up update later. 5.2.27 feels like a ticking time bomb, which is strangely exciting.

However, I do have some good great awesome news. We're still combing through all the source files, but I can promise you right now that the APK teardown is coming, and a lot of you will be ecstatic after seeing it. In the meantime, grab the APK and start hunting for more changes.

Black Friday 2013
all the best deals from

Target, Best Buy, Amazon and more

The day after Thanksgiving in the US has since the 1960s been known as "Black Friday." Originally coined in Philadelphia to describe heavy car traffic following the holiday's travels, the term has since become synonymous with shopping and bargain basement deals. Over a half-century later, things have only escalated, with Black Friday 2013 promising to be the earliest yet, as some stores began opening their doors literally on

Thanksgiving night.

MC2 Post 1748 WHO Is That Man Making The Noise -- It's Not the Doctor !

How Norfolk man Created Dalek and Tardis Sounds

A broken-down Sunday school piano and the key to a mother's front door were the unlikely origins to unlocking one of the most recognisable sounds in Doctor Who history.

But for Brian Hodgson, a former BBC Radiophonics Workshop sound engineer, these basic items were the starting point for creating the distinctive, unearthly, sound of a Tardis - the sometimes temperamental vehicle of the Time Lords.

As Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary, Mr Hodgson, who now lives on the Norfolk Broads, remembers: "It was quite difficult as everybody knew rockets went 'bang, whoosh' - but what does a time machine do?"

Android 4.4 KitKat review

Given some latitude, KitKat will soon know you better than you know yourself – and that makes it the cleverest, scariest smartphone OS yet

From:  http://www.stuff.tv

KitKat 4.4 is a complete relaunch of Android, in some ways going further and faster than any single previous release. And rather than abuse your intelligence by insisting that you scroll down this page for a verdict, we'll tell you what we think right now. It's brilliant. But not the usual gushing hyperbole-fuelled brilliant. No, KitKat 4.4 is weird, Machiavellian, never-saw-that-one-coming brilliant.

It's the OS for Neal Stephenson fans. And if we're going to come over all pseudo over a huge dollop of code, you at least deserve a credible explanation as to why...

XBox One Hit's tonight at 12:00 am.

Xbox One teardown reveals replaceable hard drive, off-the-shelf parts

The chip-obsessed gadget archaeologists at iFixit already have an Xbox One, and they're already ripping it apart. Those monsters! While they're not done dissecting and analyzing every single piece just yet, they've already found some interesting tidbits: for one, the Xbox One's 500GB HDD is a standard SATA II 2.5-in. (of the Samsung Spinpoint variety, with an 8MB cache).

Oldest minerals from Mars found on Earth

A meteorite recently retrieved from the Sahara Desert bears the oldest known minerals ever seen from the planet Mars, say scientists in the US, Australia and France. These minerals are 4.4 billion years old and therefore formed just 150 million years after the red planet's birth. Their age confirms earlier indications that the Martian crust formed quickly, as did the crusts of the Earth and Moon.

Although NASA has tried to land eight spacecraft on Mars – and succeeded seven times – these landers were not able to measure the ages of rocks nor determine all the chemical elements that constitute them. Scientists therefore value Martian meteorites that they can scrutinize in the laboratory – rocks with isotopic compositions that reveal they came from Mars. Unfortunately, with only one previous exception, all the other Martian meteorites are so young that they originated long
after the climate deteriorated.

Sony Sells Over 1 Million PlayStation 4s in First Day

From:  http://www.cbsnews.com

From:  http://news.yahoo.com

AP  19 hours ago

The consoles went on sale Friday in the U.S. and Canada. Andrew House, president and group CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a release Sunday that sales remain strong in North America. The company will launch the gaming system in Europe and Latin America on Nov. 29.

Sony has said it expects to sell 5 million units by the end of its fiscal year in March.

The PlayStation 4 is Sony's first new video game console in seven years. It faces competition from Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox One, which goes on sale this week.
