MC2 Post 1580 Beautiful Big Data Numbers -- Too Bad They're Wrong

After watching Nate Lanxon on  (TNT) TechNewsToday,  I decided to check out Wired Magazine UK and was pleasantly surprised by the site as this day's blog will attest.

Many neuroscience studies may be based on bad statistics

The fields of psychology and cognitive neuroscience have had some rough sledding in recent years. The bumps have come from  high-profile fraudsters, concerns about  findings that can't be replicated, and criticism from within the scientific ranks about shoddy statistics.

A new study adds to these woes, suggesting that a wide range of neuroscience studies lack the statistical power to back up their findings.

Google declares Glass open to hackers,
releases source code

Google's Project Glass team has released the Linux-specific source code that ships with the Android-based augmented reality device. The source is available now at code.google.com, and Google said "it should be pushed into git next to all other Android kernel source releases relatively soon."

The Los Angeles Lakers gave away thousands of white towels to their fans Sunday, and the unintended symbolism became devastatingly appropriate.

Wave the white flag. Throw in the towel. The Lakers' tumultuous season is finally finished.

MC2 Post 1578 As Schmidt speaks of caution --- Google Glass gets hacked

Hackers are starting to crack Glass.
(Credit: Google/CNET)

(not Schmidt in picture...)

Not long after Google's Eric Schmidt talks of how apps for Glass will
require Google's approval, a renowned hacker/developer
gains access to the gadget's operating system.

But just what might that mean?

"That everything IS HACKABLE ?"  Wingman.

From:   http://news.cnet.com

Within hours of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt's revelation that apps for Google Glass will require Google's approval, a renowned hacker/developer has shattered the notion of locked-down Glass.

More specifically, Jay Freeman -- aka "Saurik" -- has jailbroken it.

Gee, Our Good Old Friend, who's code I used,
to  Hack my iPod Touch, Saurik !!!

Leap Motion Controller Ship Date Delayed Until July 22

Leap Motion has just announced that its 3D gesture controller hardware ship date will be delayed, from May 13 for pre-orders and May 19 for general retail availability to July 27. The delay was caused by a need for more testing from the Leap Motion beta testing community, and an expansion of that group with additional members, according to Leap Motion CEO Michael Buckwald, who held a press conference today to discuss the missed dates.

MC2 Post 1576 Turning a Standard LCD Monitor into a Touchscreen

with a $5 Wall-Mounted Sensor.

From:   http://www.extremetech.com

Researchers at the University of Washington’s aptly named Ubiquitous Computing Lab can turn any LCD monitor in your hous into a touchscreen, with nothing more than a $5 sensor that plugs into the wall and some clever software.

The technology, called uTouch, works by measuring the electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by your hand when it moves near or touches an LCD monitor.

Sadly, the Ubiquitous Computing Lab doesn’t intend to commercialize uTouch, but co-author Sidhant Gupta tells Technology Review that the $5 sensor uses off-the-shelf parts, and the algorithms are included in the paper, so it would be fairly easy for you — or a commercial entity — to recreate the uTouch system.

MC2 Post 1574 Learning to Make a 3D Cup in Your 70's

The Older Version of Blender: 2.4

I've had an older and newer version of  Blender 3D for quite a while now.

But I always felt intimidated by the New One.

I knew I could learn really cool 3D stuff with it, but the interface just kept blocking me from "Trying".  So I kept going back to the older version in hopes of getting some preliminary skills down before tackling the new one with All-the-bells-and-whistles.

It didn't happen.  I just kept bumping my head with the old one and Avoiding the New.

Then I saw this tutorial on You Tube about creating a 3D Cup with the newer Blender 3D, and I said:  "Oh what the heck, Let's Give it a Try!"

The Video made me Feel like I Could Do it.

And  I did.

Step by step, stopping the playback lots of times, I began getting more comfortable with the New Interface.  And it stopped being so intimidating.

A Good Lesson about getting things done.
Jump in, the water's fine!

Netflix is striking a strong chord with New Series "House of Cards" as a streamed offering.

Like HBO, Showtime and now even AMC, it shows that there Is a place for Quality Programming.

And it's Not on The Big 3 1/2 Networks.

(the 1/2 is for Fox, where The Simpsons is

Still ten times better than the slew of comedies

currently on the air.  Not including the original 2 1/2 Men.)

Roku 3

King of All Media

IS IT Really ???

From:   http://www.wired.com

According to WIRED:

The Roku 3 is the official must-have device for cord-cutters. With a library of over 750 channels, an entirely new, simple user interface, and excellent hardware, the latest set-top box from Roku ($100) is the one thing you need if you’re getting your media from the internet. And even if you insist on paying large sums for a cable subscription, the Roku 3 should still be plugged into your HDTV.
