MC2 Post 1309 Every Now and Then The CLOUD Does Go Down

The Storm Takes Down Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud

Tweets were flying by the outage
hitting Netflix, Instagram and Pinterest
and SocialFlow.

Instagram Still Down After Storm Cuts Power During Brutal Heat Wave

Popular mobile photo-sharing service Instagram is still down this morning after violent storms in Virginia knocked out the cloud computing services that run it.

Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, which powers sites like Netflix and Pinterest, and SocialFlow, as well as Instagram, was impacted during the widespread power outages that affected the region.

On its EC2 support forum, Amazon posted the following updates about the N. Virginia region:

Affected users took to Twitter and Facebook to rail against the service outages.

However, the storms that caused the loss of Instagram and Netflix also knocked out power across wide swaths from Indiana to New Jersey, according to the Washington Post. A large portion of the outages centered around Washington, D.C., which has just posted its worst heat wave since 1934, with a temperature of 104. Two deaths have been reported so far, both from fallen trees.

The power outage is expected to last several days.

MC2 Post 1308 US Navy’s High-Resolution Radar can See Individual Raindrops in a Storm

US Naval Research Laboratory says study could help develop new severe weather monitoring applications

The US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) researchers said recently that a Navy very high-resolution Doppler radar can actually spot individual raindrops in a cloudburst, possibly paving the way for new weather monitoring applications that could better track or monitor weather and severe storms.

MC2 Post 1306 What's Inside Google I/O

From:  http://news.cnet.com

1 of 19 from An early glimpse inside Google I/O (pictures)

The map pin marks the spot for developers this week outside Moscone West in San Francisco, where Google is preparing to host thousands of developers at the annual Google I/O developer's conference.

According to Google, it took 90 days to sell out I/O 2009, 50 days to sell out I/O 2010, and 59 minutes to sell out I/O in 2011. This year? Google I/O 2012 sold out in just more than 20 minutes.

MC2 Post 1305 MC2 has Harped About Cable TV Being Dead

To that I Add this Very Weak Caveat:  It's Mostly Dead.

Holding on to a broken model that turns Cable TV into an

advertising Copy of yesterday's RADIO.

Which According to Tim Wu's  "The Master Switch"  kept

the more advanced form of Radio (FM) at bay for Decades, because

Bell didn't want to upset its advertising model  in AM,

a very lucrative Cash Cow.

Thankfully there is Still TCM on Cable TV

and Upcoming Smart TV

which adds  Internet choices of dubious value,

and currently is not too far removed from

Cable's DUMB choices.

And Yes, his Apple TV IS coming....

Whatever That Is?

Thankfully Netflix streaming is still fighting the

Android application reads credit card data
over NFC

German security consultant Thomas Skora has published an Android application that is able to read details from contactless credit cards over a near field communication (NFC) connection. The open source application was available in Google's Play store for a while but has now been removed. Its code is still hosted on GitHub.

Hacker Extracts RFID Credit Card Details

The widespread use, especially in US credit cards, of RFID chips which can be read through clothing or wallets for contactless payments can lead to cards being read without the owners knowledge or permission. At the Shmoocon security conference held in Washington D.C., US business magazine Forbes reports that Kristin Paget impressively demonstrated the ability to read data on RFID chipped credit cards and make a payment that hadn't been authorised by the card owner. However, credit card manufacturers don't think that there is an increased risk.

When we look back on the Great Depression, we tend to picture it in black and white. The soup-lines, the closed-up shops, the shanty-towns - all just shades of gray in our collective memory.

So it's a bit surprising that in the midst of that drab time, a rainbow of color flooded into homes across the country, when an iconic piece of Americana - Fiesta dinnerware - was born.

SSDs Cost Half as Much as They Did in 2011

So It’s Time to Upgrade

While last years Thailand floods saw the cost of HDDs skyrocket, the price of solid state drives has been slowly dropping. In fact, since early 2011 prices have dropped on average by 46 percent.

Tech Report has taken a long and thorough look at the changing prices of SSDs, and the news is good: the drops in price has been steady, but significant. That's largely thanks to healthy, if aggressive, competition between big players in the market. Except on the part of Intel, which has shied away from discounting its drives.
