For nearly 60 years, U.S. Route 66 was America's Mother Road, a highway stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles and connecting towns and cities along its 2,451-mile length. It was the migratory path for California-bound workers during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s and vacationers in later years seeking sunnier climates.
