If any of that makes at least a little bit of sense of what is happening to the WEB and Why, let me elaborate.
The powers that be have a vested interest in your DATA, for various reasons. Some Good, Most Not So Good.
The Powers That Be (PTB) in This Story are Apple, Android, Windows, FaceBook and even late-comer Amazon. Most are now focusing on the Tablet Platform, where rules of conduct are non-existent. Some like to call that the "Wild West", an apt designation.
Most of those PTB like living in a Closed Eco-System, sometimes called: "A Walled Garden". Some are a little more "Open" like Facebook (recently) and Android excluding the Kindle-version of Android, which is very closed.
Advertisers (also known as Deep Pockets) like to pay Big Bucks for Prime Targeted ADs, a fact that is well known to the PTB, both Open and Closed.
It's also the Money-Train IDEA invented by Bell at the turn of the century, to sell "ADS" on the radio. (See The Master Switch by Tim WU).
This is also why TV is devolving back into a Bizarro-form of Radio.
I like to call Reality TV a new form of "Good-Grief" Charlie Brown Chatty Rooms with peep-holes.
