The US Air Force Research Lab put out the call for a new kind of drone in August last year, an ultralight one that every soldier could carry and launch unaided to give them a detailed 360-degree view of their surroundings. The system would need to work independently under a wide range of conditions.

Hacked Medical Scanner Becomes 

a Nuclear Forge



THE MRI machine hisses and spurts in a huge room strewn with concrete blocks and vacuum tubes. Liquid helium spews from frost-encrusted valves, and an ambulance-style light flashes red.

A cylindrical opening looks set to swallow people for some macabre medical experiment, but this scanner is no longer meant to hold humans. From now on its occupants will be exotic, short-lived atoms that could previously only be found in exploding stars.
