MC2 Post 1471 Okay Splain Lucy Splain

Wingman tries to explain not finishing Yesterday's Blog:

Ok, it's like this...  On Sunday I caught the beginning of Leo's TWIT show and expected to write a little blog linked story about it.

My tentative tag-line was going to be:  Making Sense of number
of sensors that have become a part of all New Smart Phones.

EZ peasy, I thought.

Then I heard an expanded pair of stories on Monday's Tech News Today show that made me think: This may be a bigger Blog Story all-by-itself.

When I started thinking about these "gadgets" being Probes mining bigger
pieces of our personal Environmental Data for profit, I said "Whoa!"

I Though: Hey, our smart phones have become ET's phoning "home"

all kinds of stuff about us, right under our noses.

Who's keeping track of all this?

I'm pretty sure it's Not the Right People.

Wingman.

Your Smartphone is Part of a Sensor Array
===================================

Have you ever really stopped to wonder what kind of data your smartphone (Android or iOS) device collects? Although you may use your phone as a communications device, many of us think of your phone as an incredible distributed sensor array. If one can combine that data with demographic and purchasing trend information the possibilities are endless. After reading this post and viewing the screenshots you will better understand why Amazon is willing to sell their Kindles at cost, and Apple, Google and Microsoft view it as imperative to be a big player in the mobile market through both phones and tablets. Data represents big money.

If you're interested in reading a more in depth study of the sensors in your mobile phone, read this post from the Mobile Device Insight Blog. My curiousity found me installing the free AndroSensor app. By running this app I can see all the data my smartphone is collecting at this very instant. If you've granted access to lots and lots of apps to collect data about you, consider thinking twice. My own smartphone collects this data:

    Location (GPS)
    Accelerometer
    Light
    Magnetic Field
    Orientation
    Proxmity
    Battery
    Sound Level

The sensors included in "smart" phones will only increase in the future.

And Then IBM Has This Little Peek at  "Just Around the Corner."

The 5 Senses in 5 Years...

===================================

In 5 years computer senses will include
Taste and Smell, says IBM

For several years IBM has been making predictions about “innovations that will change our lives in the next five years”. Its latest spell of crystal ball gazing looks at the five senses and how computers will be able to use them to help us. In case you need a reminder, the five senses are; touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell.

In the next five years IBM thinks that computers won’t only be able to use these five important senses but that their abilities will be good enough to augment and extend the human senses. There will be “no need to call for Superman when we have real super senses at hand”. Let’s look at the senses in turn and see how IBM thinks computers will be able to extend our cognition.
