By the numbers, the difference between screens on the new and older model doesn’t seem that big. The smaller Kindle Fire HD, with a screen measuring 7 inches diagonally has a screen resolution of 1280 x 800. Last year’s 7-inch model, and the upgraded version with better innards unveiled Thursday, has a screen with 1024 x 600 pixels.

That doesn’t come close to the latest iPad, which has a resolution of 2048 x 1536. Nonetheless, this upgrade feels like a big leap for Amazon. It means not seeing any of those annoying pixels, a welcome relief that feels even better when you consider the price. At $199, versus $499 for the latest iPad, I can see this being a popular stocking stuffer this Christmas.

After a slow start, digital radio might

finally be getting somewhere.


More people are buying DAB radios, coverage is increasing and, digital stations account for a growing share of the radio audience, according to the stats [PDF]. The BBC’s four main exclusively digital radio stations, for instance, reach a combined total of well over 5m listeners a week, mostly received using DAB.

Whether this format could or should replace FM is another matter and one that probably doesn’t concern typical digital radio users. They’re going to be more interested in the bigger choice of stations, the naming system that makes it easier to find what’s on, and other extras.

Google is in a tough spot. Apple suddenly looks like an ally now that Amazon has unveiled Kindle Fire HD. Both companies stand to lose big time should the tablet achieve any meaningful sales success. Google Play doesn't offer strong enough ecosystem to battle with either iPad or Kindle Fire, but Amazon's tablet is more likely to scorch Android's earth. Amazon's vertical integration -- store, software and services -- is tight, as good as Apple's and in many respects superior. 

No matter which wins, Android loses.

Why Chrome Hasn't Killed Mozilla Firefox

Four years ago, Google launched Chrome. At the time, I wrote a commentary piece that it wasn't likely that Chrome would kill IE.

As it turns out, I was (mostly) right. IE still exists, though it has its lowest share in years, thanks in no small part to Chrome's growing share.Chrome however isn't just growing entirely at IE's expense. It has also had an impact on Mozilla's Firefox too.

When Chrome came out in 2008, I don't think it was clear to me that four years later I'd be talking about Chrome version 23. That's right, Chrome has pushed out an average of 6 or more stable browsers a year, every year since 2008.

That incredible rate of release has not been mimicked by IE. IE continues to evolve at a comparably glacial pace. For those that require Google Apps and modern web apps in general, IE simply doesn't move fast enough.

But what about Firefox?

MC2 Post 1380 3 Hidden Features In Firefox 15 You May Want To Enable

Firefox 15, which has been released a few days ago, comes with some cool features disabled by default: native PDF viewer, preferences in tab and click-to-play plugins.

These features have been in testing for quite a while, but they are not 100% ready so they aren't enabled by default and there are no options in the Firefox preferences to enable them. But, if you don't mind an occasional glitch, you can enable them  using the about:config tool.


For Example:

Firefox 15 comes with a native PDF reader that uses JavaScript (pdf.js) to open PDF files directly in the browser. This feature is disabled by default but it can be enabled by following these steps: open a new tab, type "about:config", search for "pdfjs.disabled" and set it to "false" (double click it).

A page-turner in every Good Sense of the word.  The TECH details, if you're
like me, is something to drool over.  It has so much interesting technology I Had to Take Notes, 
so I could look it up later.  Excellent.  Wingman.

Okay, start with this first because it’s the only work of fiction in this group of three, an SF thriller in Michael Crichton tradition.  (BTW, Crichton’s posthumous Micro is worth the read too)  Suarez’s story is about the immediate future.  In fact, it’s barely science fiction since it pivots on technology readily available or emerging right now.  The plot concerns autonomous drone swarms attacking Americans across the country and around the world, from an unknown enemy, in frighteningly efficient terrorist-like strikes.  There’s a hero, a love story, etc.  But the machines, and action sequences, are the compelling parts.  As is the terrifying opening scene.

that reminded you of old woodcuts.

Anyway, what I was lookinjg for in the Python Book was:

 New Programming Editor and I thought I'd check out some that worked

 well with the Python Programming Language.

I knew about Vi (now Vim) and EMACS,
