It's not clear how it happened, but for several hours on Tuesday thousands

if not millions of Chinese Internet users were being dumped at the door of a

tiny, brick-front house in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The most exciting aspect of contemporary virtual reality is its implications. Even using Oculus VR's early duct taped-prototype, most users immediately "get it." You're transported to, say, Tuscany, or an underwater exploration vehicle, or a space fighter, and that experience is enough to trigger a flood of ideas for other potential interactions -- interactions that are dramatically heightened by employing a VR headset. How about deep-sea exploration in 4K? Or maybe Mars? And we're not talking just video games, but experiences.

MC2 Post 1786 What Windows 9 Must Do To Avoid Flopping Like Windows 8

Windows 8 is a flop. It is a painful thing to say about one of the most ambitious operating systems ever released, but the stats don’t lie. It has taken half the OS market share Windows 7 did in its first 12 months (10% vs. 20%) and now the adoption rate is so slow it is barely gaining on its 4 ½ year old predecessor. Finally Microsoft has had enough.

This week leaks flooded out that Windows 9

will be formally announced at Build, Microsoft’s annual

developer event in April.

MC2 Post 1785 Nintendo slashes 2014 sales forecast for Wii U from 9 million to 2.8 million

It's not even financials season yet, but Nintendo is trying to lower expectations in advance. In a statement today, it's announced that it's reassessed unit sales for its flagship Wii U console, shaving hacking it down from 9 million for April 2013 - March 2014 to just 2.8 million -- less than a third of the original estimate. It's also less than the number of Wii Us that Nintendo sold in its launch year.
That was 3.45 million,

Ultrafast phase measurements could boost optical computing

Physicists in Germany say they have taken an important step towards the creation of ultrafast computers that use light instead of electrical signals to process information. The team has created the first compact electronic device that can measure the absolute phase of extremely short light pulses.

While the device is first expected to find use in laser labs, it could someday play an important role in systems that use ultrashort light pulses to process information.

The work was done by Ferenc Krausz and colleagues of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching.
