Growth in Apple's stock has been slightly weaker for the past month in the run-up to weaker-than-expected earnings for the third quarter, but new reports of a September launch for the next iPhone as well as a smaller, cheaper iPad Mini have been pushing the price higher.

All shareholders of record as of Monday's close also received a cash dividend of $2.65 per-share today, the first dividend payment to Apple shareholders since December 1995.

Facebook shares dipped to a new low Thursday as the company unlocked 271 million shares for trading.

The stock dipped below the $20 mark for the first time Thursday. By mid-day, shares were hovering just below that mark — a drop of nearly 6 percent from the day’s open and nearly 50 percent from its initial offering price of $38.

The company has had a rough time since going public and has never recovered from its glitch-plagued opening day.

The Apple v. Samsung trial has unearthed a Samsung study that identified eight cities where the iPhone had a significant lead over Samsung devices in 2010, AllThingsD reports.

The analysis found Apple to have a 17.5 percent lead on Samsung Mobile in the target markets prior to the launch of the Galaxy phone. The eight cities were San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas-Fort Worth, New York and Boston.

Forbes’ Meghan Casserly’s interview with Google’s Chief People Officer Laszlo Bock is must reading: Here’s What Happens To Google Employees When They Die. It’s all the more awe-inspiring as a simple disclosure long after the fact, not a recruiting stunt or PR move.

If a U.S. Google employee passes away while employed there, his or her surviving spouse or domestic partner gets a check for 50% of the employee’s salary every year for 10 years. There’s no tenure requirement so most of the 34,000 employees qualify. That’s a big benefit and big-hearted, but is it taxed?

A new free service has been announced for developers of custom Android ROMs. The service, called OTA Update Center, is relatively simple and allows developers to easily push over-the-air updates to their users. Rather than requiring developers to host their own files, OTA Update Center provides a server and an update app that streamlines the process of updating a custom ROM. After registering for Update Center, a developer needs to simply add a few lines to their ROM’s build.prop file and provide a direct-link to the download. The rest of the work is done by Google’s (GOOG) service, and users will automatically be notified when an update is available for their custom ROMs.

Intel to Bring Wireless Charging to Smartphones and Ultrabooks in 2013

 

According to DigiTimes' "upstream supply chain," Intel is readying technology that will wirelessly charge Intel powered smartphones via over-the-air induction. To put it in layman's terms, hardware inside the phone will be able to grab low power electricity from mid-air and charge the battery. It's safe, and already has a standard in the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi method, which we've seen in action with contact induction charging on the Thunderbolt. The real barrier, according to the sources has been cost.
