The chip-obsessed gadget archaeologists at iFixit already have an Xbox One, and they're already ripping it apart. Those monsters! While they're not done dissecting and analyzing every single piece just yet, they've already found some interesting tidbits: for one, the Xbox One's 500GB HDD is a standard SATA II 2.5-in. (of the Samsung Spinpoint variety, with an 8MB cache).

Oldest minerals from Mars found on Earth


A meteorite recently retrieved from the Sahara Desert bears the oldest known minerals ever seen from the planet Mars, say scientists in the US, Australia and France. These minerals are 4.4 billion years old and therefore formed just 150 million years after the red planet's birth. Their age confirms earlier indications that the Martian crust formed quickly, as did the crusts of the Earth and Moon.

Although NASA has tried to land eight spacecraft on Mars – and succeeded seven times – these landers were not able to measure the ages of rocks nor determine all the chemical elements that constitute them. Scientists therefore value Martian meteorites that they can scrutinize in the laboratory – rocks with isotopic compositions that reveal they came from Mars. Unfortunately, with only one previous exception, all the other Martian meteorites are so young that they originated long
after the climate deteriorated.

The consoles went on sale Friday in the U.S. and Canada. Andrew House, president and group CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a release Sunday that sales remain strong in North America. The company will launch the gaming system in Europe and Latin America on Nov. 29.

Sony has said it expects to sell 5 million units by the end of its fiscal year in March.

The PlayStation 4 is Sony's first new video game console in seven years. It faces competition from Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox One, which goes on sale this week.

It bears a passing resemblance to the vinyl record, but this futuristic concept was envisioned as more than just sound on a platter. The recording method involved electron beams and lasers; the base material was a coated, transparent plastic disc; and you'd get both an eyeful and an earful from the end product. Its intended goal in the market may have initially flubbed, but its core design has been patently embedded into a variety of successful formats ever since. That pile of plastic discs that litters your living space or sits in a "free" box by your doorstep has a history that goes back more than 50 years. The inventor, David Paul Gregg, has been dubbed the "Father of the Optical Disc" by some, but it's indisputable that his ideas lie at the heart of the technology. His innovative designs for recording video were ahead of their time in the '60s and managed to pique the interest of many in the industry. Unfortunately, the commercial release saw limited adoption and strong competition from its videotape-based competitors. The core elements of the format, however, had broader applications than simply video playback.

Gregg began to form the idea for the optical disc in the late 1950s while working at a motion picture and audio company called Westrex. His design was a deviation from the costly tape technology in use at the time. It involved writing data onto an optical disc, stamping for mass replication and using a concentrated light source to play back the data. In 1960, he took a job with Mincom, a video division at 3M, which had been looking for new, marketable technologies. He authored at least one patent for the company while he was there, one that described electron beam-based recording onto a multilayered surface. Gregg was cagey about his concept, though, and kept most of his ideas close to the chest.

While it took a few decades for technology to match the high standards of Gregg's innovative vision, its final form influenced a major market shift. In stores, displays once stacked high with videotapes and cassettes gave way to slim, all-purpose plastic discs. The product was cheap, easy to mass-produce and offered the sharp clarity of digital for both audio and video output. The optical disc helped users escape the questionable fidelity of consumer tape products, bridging the gap until bandwidth and processing power made digital downloads plausible. Optical disc technology brought us the age of CDs, CD-ROMs and perhaps most notably, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, which came full circle to the optical disc's origins, finally delivering the product as it was originally intended.

Quantum states have been shown to endure in a room-temperature solid-state device for a whopping 39 minutes, shattering the previous record of 2 s. The feat was achieved by physicists in Canada, the UK and Germany, who used phosphorus atoms in silicon as their quantum bits – or qubits. The breakthrough offers hope that normally fragile quantum states could be made robust enough to be used in practical quantum computers or even in "quantum money".

Quantum computers are designed to exploit the counterintuitive idea that tiny objects can exist in more than one state at the same time. Rather than processing bits – which are either 0 or 1 – such devices instead manipulate qubits, which can be 0 and 1 simultaneously. Vast numbers of operations could therefore, in principle, be carried out in parallel and rendering these devices far quicker than classical computers.

But anyone trying to build a working quantum computer has to deal with the fact that qubits tend to be incredibly fragile, which means the quantum information they hold is rapidly destroyed by external noise. One way of getting around this problem is to cool the qubit to near absolute zero to minimize its exposure to thermal noise. But working at such low temperatures is not particularly practical, which is why researchers are keen on find qubits that can operate at room temperature.

The globe experiences lightning some 50 times a second, yet the details of what initiates this common occurrence and what effects it has on the atmosphere – lightning may be linked to incredibly powerful and energetic bursts called terrestrial gamma ray flashes, or TGFs—remains a mystery.

In mid-November, a football-sized mission called Firefly, 

which is funded by the National Science Foundation, 

will launch into space to study lightning and these 

gamma ray flashes from above.

Simpsons headed to Cable in TV’s 

biggest off-network deal ever

Because a cartoon comedy show such as the Simpsons was relatively unheard of at the time, Fox was able to secure a contract that meant they were able to hold complete exclusivity with the show just so long as they were still airing it on their station. Fast forward 26 years and you’ve got a show that continues to push new episodes.

And who did Fox sell the rights to the TV show to? Why, FX of course. Inside the new FX network FXX, the television show will not only run new episodes starting with Season 26, it’ll eventually have the entirety of the show’s current 25 seasons before it. This cable deal is readied and likely to roll out at a hefty $750 million USD.

You may have missed it, but Tina Brown recently went to India and proclaimed the death of magazines, journalism and of reading itself, more or less in that order.

Brown, the former editor of Newsweek and the New Yorker, must not do much reading herself anymore. Why else would such an intelligent woman say reading must be dead because “I think you can have more satisfaction from live conversation”? Civilization, Brown added, is “going back to oral culture where the written word will be less relevant.”

Brown’s words, spoken at a conference in Goa, India, were jotted down by a writer for the Hindustan Times who then reported them in that venerable storytelling form called journalism. Thanks to that scribe, Brown's statement has been blogged (by New York magazine, The Guardian, and many other outlets) and shared and reshared and tweeted and commented upon in that collection of virtual gathering places known as “the social media.”



There’s an amusing irony in all this. We now have the most advanced tools in the history of humanity to spread the written word -- and people simply can’t resist using those tools to spread the idea that the civilization that produced them is doomed.
This week, a reader at the American Conservative (which also reproduced Brown’s words), took to his or her keyboard and responded on the website’s comments section with a summary of all the “death” talk he or she’s been reading about lately:

SFR France: 16GB Moto G release date set for November 19

French mobile operator SFR has announced plans to carry the Moto G soon after Motorola unveiled its new, ultra-affordable, Android smartphone.  According to a short post on its blog, the Moto G will launch on November 16 with the carrier, although pricing details aren’t available at this time.

However, SFR was able to confirm that it will stock the 16GB Moto G version,  which is the more expensive model.

In the USA, the Moto G will sell for $179 (8GB model) and $199 (16GB model).   These are off-contract prices for the Moto G, and we expect European prices to be somewhat similar.

A few days ago, a Moto G listing on Amazon UK revealed that the 16GB model had a £159.99 pricing. That’s translates to about $255 or €190.  Since SFR is getting the phone on November 19, we can only imagine that other carriers will also launch the handset around the same time. The first launch wave includes various markets, as follows: Brazil, UK, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Colombia, Canada, Peurto Rico, Mexico, Argentina, France, Peru, Chile, Honk Kong, Netherlands and Singapore.

Nick BILTON,  was a guest on Sunday's TWIT Netcast with Leo Laporte.  And was interesting enough for getting me to pick up the book on Audible, my favorite mode of reading, these days.

I also revert to my   'old school reading'  ways and read  (huh?)

 physical books as well.

For example, I'm also reading an old paperback copy of  "Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card.  I remember having a hard time reading it many years ago.  But, hopefully, I'm in a different place now after re-reading

(on audible)  Red Mars, which I really enjoyed.  So Enders is going to have a tough time matching that, but so-far it's holding up pretty well.
