Giant online retailer Amazon.com Inc. is turning up the heat on rivals this holiday season and beyond under a new deal with the U.S. Postal Service for delivering packages on Sundays.

Starting this week, the postal service will bring Amazon packages on Sundays to shoppers' doors in the Los Angeles and New York metropolitan areas at no extra charge. Next year, it plans to roll out year-round Sunday delivery to Dallas, New Orleans, Phoenix and other cities.

MC2 Post 1738 New SD card format is speedy enough for 4K video

Outside of a few smartphones, 4K video capture has largely been limited to pro-level hardware; the SD cards in regular cameras frequently can't handle so many pixels at once. That won't be a problem in the near future, as the SD Association has just unveiled an Ultra High Speed Class 3 (U3) card format that's up to the job. The spec guarantees write performance of at least 30 MB/s, or enough bandwidth to record 4K clips without hiccups.

You'll have to wait for U3-capable devices and cards to begin shooting, but it shouldn't be long before you can produce footage worthy of your Ultra HD TV.

The Guardian Film Show Offers a Nicely Balanced Review of Current Movies.  Not the Bone-head stuff you see on the "Major Networks".  But what can you expect when you can't even get the News Networks to give "The News" and Not Intrepretation.

Spielberg and Lucas gave a lecture (probably at USC) a while back about the abandonment of "serious" movies for the easier and multi-series SFX Blockbusters with lots of explosions and crash scenes and a bare minimum of (gasp) Dialog.

They Port so easily to the European market without all that unnecessary  translating problems.

The Only way Film Makers can guarantee 
a good return on investment is to make trilogies.

The company's also doing all right on the TV front, thanks to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The next step? Netflix, obviously.

You can already find a number of the publisher's superheroes over on the streaming service, and now its parent company, Disney, is looking for something a bit more original. All parties are no doubt hoping we've got that dreadful Affleck fiasco out of our collective consciousness long enough to give a new Daredevil series a shot.

Nitrophenyl functionalized graphene can act as a room-temperature 2D magnet. The nitrophenyl-functionalization orientation and degree of coverage directly affect the magnetic properties of the graphene surface.

Talk about a multi-institutional collaboration: The pristine graphene used in these experiments was epitaxially grown at Georgia Tech. Then, it was chemically functionalized at UC Riverside. The physics of magnetism was studied at FIU and UC Berkeley.
 

"After working on this challenge since 2008, we have finally overcome it by using refined functionalization chemistry to induce interacting magnetic spins in 1D and 2D graphene nanostructures,"Jeongmin Hong, a Postdoc Fellow at UC Berkeley's Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science, tells Nanowerk. "It is the first ever experimental evidence of magnetism in graphene-based nanostructures."

India counts down to ambitious Mars mission

 India is gearing up for its first mission to Mars, which if successful, would make it the first Asian nation to reach the Red Planet.

The unmanned Mars Orbiter spacecraft is scheduled for lift-off on Tuesday afternoon from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR located on Sriharikota Island off the coast of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

India's Mars satellite, which will collect information about the planet's atmosphere and surface, is expected to enter the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014.

"Okay Google." Those Touchless Controls aren't just for the Moto X anymore -- they're now part and parcel of the Nexus 5. With today's unveiling of Google's (terribly leaked) Nexus 5, we're getting a first look at Android 4.4 KitKat on the handset, and that OS update comes with some significant tweaks to Search and Now. For starters, Nexus 5 users will have the ability to set hot keywords as a means of activating or "waking up" Now voice search. So, presumably, this means you'll be able to link any word you'd like to start barking voice commands at Now.

 

Just don't be surprised if Now talks back to you: KitKat also apparently allows for a dialogue of sorts between users and the handset to refine search queries. This could be especially useful when directing Now to access contacts by first name. For example, saying "Text Jennifer" could result in it asking you to specify, "Which Jennifer?" It's smart control made smarter.

SAN FRANCISCO — Google unveiled its new Nexus 5 smartphone Thursday as the Internet search giant steps up competition with Apple's iPhone, especially in emerging markets.
 
The device has a 5-inch display and is tightly integrated with new Google search capabilities and Google Now, the company's personal-assistant technology, through the home screen. It went on sale Thursday.

Nexus 5, which Google developed with LG, comes with a new camera that corrects for small hand movements to reduce blur. New camera software also helps users take better photos in difficult situations, such as low light with fast-moving subjects.

The device comes in black and white and costs $349 for a 16GB unlocked version or $399 for 32GB. That's cheaper than Apple's new iPhones. The iPhone 5c, the cheaper of the two new iPhones, costs $549 for a 16GB version that comes without a wireless contract.
