On its July Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released a total of seven patch packages (bulletins). All except one of them close critical vulnerabilities. The company has closed a total of 34 holes in Windows, Internet Explorer, Office and many other products, among them the Windows kernel vulnerability that has affected the Windows privilege system for over a month

For example, the much-hyped Mailbox email app — bought by Dropbox for a reported $100 million shortly after launching — will now be able to send attachments, which neither Apple’s native iOS email app nor Google’s iOS GMail app can do (except for photos, in the latter case). In the new version of Mailbox, tapping the paper clip icon at the bottom of the new message window opens a list of Dropbox files in the same way clicking the paper clip in the PC version of Gmail opens a window for browsing files. (Yahoo has already incorporated a version of the Chooser in the web version of its email app).

“Our dream is to be able to work across all of these walls,” Houston says.

Dropbox may be in a unique position to do just that. For now, the company has no overarching obligations to Apple, Google, Facebook, or Microsoft.

Google plugs Android APK Security Hole,

says Partners have Patched Code

Bluebox Security unearthed a potentially devastating Android security issue

last week that would allow hackers to turn legit APKs into malware.

Samsung is already shipping devices that are inoculated against the exploit.

Play by the rules by installing apps from the Google Play Store and you never have to worry,

but if you want to be on the safe side, give Lookout Security a spin.

The TronPi is a Mellontron Emulator based on the 35$ Raspberry Pi computer. It has the 4 classic Tron sounds: Choir, Strings, Brass and Flute. The TronPi is controlled with a standard USB/MIDI Keyboard and doesn't have any perceptible latency.

All the audio in this video was taken straight from the Raspberry PI's audio output, no further processing was added to the source. It's straight out of the computer. The reverb ambience you hear on the recordings is built in the sampler and adjustable.

The computer boots in 30 seconds or so. It supports MIDI program changes and once loaded, program changes are instant, no lag.

Elevating navigation data into the driver's line of sight, Garmin's first-ever head-up display aims to reduce distraction, and it looks pretty cool.

Smartphones have pretty much taken over as the default navigation tool for many drivers. However, some locales (including our home state of California) have outright banned smartphone use in the car: no windshield mounts, no dashboard cradles. So, how are you going to get your turn-by-turn directions when looking at your phone is illegal?

Today, Garmin announced a new way to interact with its StreetPilot and Navigon smartphone navigation apps: the HUD.

Samsung is an unexpected suitor for the company. According to today's report, Boxee — which is based in New York and has offices in Tel Aviv — will retain its 45 employees following the acquisition. The startup had raised a total of $28.5 million in funding and was reportdly seeking another $30 million before it opted to pursue an acquisition.

Android Flaw Allows Hackers to Surreptitiously Modify Apps

The weakness involves the way legitimate Android applications are cryptographically signed to ensure they haven't been modified by parties other than the trusted developer, according to a blog post published Wednesday by researchers from mobile security startup Bluebox.

The flaw has existed since at least the release of Android 1.6 almost four years ago.

Hackers who exploit the vulnerability can modify app code to include backdoors, keyloggers, or other malicious functionality without changing the verification signature.

Firefox OS Phone Launches Tuesday

in Spain at $3 a Month

Spain-based carrier Telefonica will release on Tuesday the very first Firefox OS phone -- the inexpensive ZTE Open. The launch is a significant milestone in Mozilla's attempt to crack the Apple and Google mobile strongholds.

It's not every day that a new mobile operating system arrives, but Tuesday will be one of them as Telefonica begins selling the inexpensive ZTE Open with Mozilla's Firefox OS in Spain.

The move marks the commercial beginning of an effort by phone makers and network operators to use Mozilla's open-source, browser-based operating system to reclaim power in the mobile market lost to Apple and Google.

The phone itself costs 69 euros ($90), including 30 euros ($39) of pay-as-you-go credit -- or for those who sign up for a two-year contract, for 2.38 euros ($3.10) per month. That's a lot cheaper than most of the new Android and iOS smartphones on the market today that consumers have flocked to and that Firefox OS is competing with.
