The rover was scooping sand for the first time with its robotic arm when its camera picked up on the object. NASA boffins have put a stop to any further Curiosity activity while the rover takes extra pictures to try to figure out what the mysterious, but tiny, thing could be.

Curiosity is set up to take soil samples so that it can run chemical and mineralogical tests and discover what makes up the Red Planet's surface. Looking at the chemical makeup of the dirt is just one of the ways that the rover's science instruments will analyse whether Mars has ever or could ever support microbial life.

The Falcon 9 rocket from upstart rocket firm SpaceX, which lifted off yesterday with supplies for the International Space Station, will deliver those supplies successfully following loss of an engine during launch. However a commercial satellite which was also aboard the rocket has been placed into a lower orbit than planned as a result of the mishap.

A 13.2 Billion Year Peek into the Past

Photo NASA has combined 10 years of deep-space photos to create what it dubs the "eXtreme Deep Field" (XDF), an image of a tiny slice of the sky that contains well over five thousand galaxies, some almost unimaginably ancient.

"The XDF is the deepest image of the sky ever obtained and reveals the faintest and most distant galaxies ever seen," said principal invesigator Garth Illingworth in a statement announcing the image's release.

Exceptionally large amounts of it down south right now

Even as the Arctic sea ice starts to grow again from its summery shrunken condition, the austral ice at the planet's other pole may have yet to reach its wintery peak extent. As the graph shows, at the moment it is much larger than normal for the time of year, and depending on what happens in the next week or so it might hit a record high. There has already been a point at which a record for that date occurred, and only a handful of higher daily satellite readings have ever been taken.

Despite their mainstream adoption and the promises of how they’ll transform manufacturing, there’s one thing that these new machines still suck at.

“3-D printers and CNC [lathes] are well suited for volumes, while laser cutters are all suited for planes,” says Marco Perry, Partner and Engineering Director at design consultancy Pensa. “However, when you only want to print lines, they are inefficient, slow, weak and expensive.”

Pensa demonstrated their solution to this problem in last weekend’s World Maker Faire 3-D printer pavilion. And unlike the majority of the devices on display, their machine doesn’t involve plastic at all. It’s a 3-D wire bender, aptly named the D.I.Wire Bender, and its functionality opens new doors of fabrication for many desktop designers.

The theme song to the new James Bond movie, "Skyfall," was released today, with Adele singing her heart out and the music behind her offering nostalgia for classic Bond themes of yore. But is the music itself even important when the song's debut is targeted as a way of creating buzz for the movie's release.

The Theme song was given a pass with an awkward lyric rhyme 

that  the reviewer "says" Adele Made It Work.  

I don't agree, but then I'm not a big Adele Fan anyway.  Trying to shoehorn a Hit Song from a Bond Title is tough business.  Which is why they skipped trying in the last two movies, thankfully.

Of course on the Jelly Bean ROM I'm running flash doesn't appear in the market, but when I installed the apk, flash worked perfectly on a number of websites.
