Like a lot of people, I am astounded over Google’s employee death benefits. Forbes’ Meghan Casserly’s interview with Google’s Chief People Officer Laszlo Bock is must reading: Here’s What Happens To Google Employees When They Die. It’s all the more awe-inspiring as a simple disclosure long after the fact, not a recruiting stunt or PR move.

If a U.S. Google employee passes away while employed there, his or her surviving spouse or domestic partner gets a check for 50% of the employee’s salary every year for 10 years. There’s no tenure requirement so most of the 34,000 employees qualify. That’s a big benefit and big-hearted, but is it taxed?

OTA Update Center Allows Developers to Push Updates to Custom Android ROMs

A new free service has been announced for developers of custom Android ROMs. The service, called OTA Update Center, is relatively simple and allows developers to easily push over-the-air updates to their users. Rather than requiring developers to host their own files, OTA Update Center provides a server and an update app that streamlines the process of updating a custom ROM. After registering for Update Center, a developer needs to simply add a few lines to their ROM’s build.prop file and provide a direct-link to the download. The rest of the work is done by Google’s (GOOG) service, and users will automatically be notified when an update is available for their custom ROMs.

Intel to Bring Wireless Charging to Smartphones and Ultrabooks in 2013

 

According to DigiTimes' "upstream supply chain," Intel is readying technology that will wirelessly charge Intel powered smartphones via over-the-air induction. To put it in layman's terms, hardware inside the phone will be able to grab low power electricity from mid-air and charge the battery. It's safe, and already has a standard in the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi method, which we've seen in action with contact induction charging on the Thunderbolt. The real barrier, according to the sources has been cost.

Curiosity, the largest and most advanced spacecraft ever sent to another planet, stuck its extraordinary landing Sunday night in triumphant and flawless fashion, and is poised to begin its pioneering, two-year hunt for the building blocks of life — signs that Earth's creatures may not be not alone in the universe.

NASA's $2.5-billion mission involved the work of more than 5,000 people from 37 states, some of whom had labored for 10 years to hear the two words that Al Chen, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer, said inside mission control at 10:32 p.m.: “Touchdown confirmed.”

The public is invited to tune in for a series of news briefings from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the upcoming landing of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. See the schedule. (Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech) NASA’s rover Curiosity is scheduled to land on the surface of the Red Planet on Sunday, August 5.

Curiosity should actually touch down around 10:17 p.m. PDT, but with nearly 14 minutes of radio-transmission time between Mars and Earth at the time of landing, mission control at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at Caltech does not expect to receive confirmation of the rover’s landing until 10:31 p.m. PDT at the earliest.

Want to be a witness to this historic landing? NASA TV coverage online begins August 5 at 8:30 p.m. Pacific/11:30 p.m. Eastern.

Museums, science centers, and NASA visitor centers around the country will be hosting viewing parties and events. The

NASA TV coverage will even be broadcast on the Toshiba Vision screen in New York’s Times Square.

Stuff that Keeps Me Sane.

Or ways of thinking Outside the Box.

My Desktop PC is a Stock HP Compaq running Windows 7.  The Browsers on my machine are Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari.  I currently have available three emulators which are Oracle VM VirtualBox where I test various flavors of  Linux Distros.  A 16GB Thumb-Drive where I have XBMC on USB, an XBOX Desktop emulator, and on the Deskto a new version Bluestacks Beta where I can run just about all the Android Markets , Google Play, Amazon and a quite a few others in my Desktop Android emulator.  They  run in Windowed ot Full Screen.  

My iPod Touch 2G was Jail-Broken years ago.  I have Netflix and WD TV Live.  Because, as I've said so many times: TV IS Dead.

Of course I also have iTunes and Audible Books on my Desktop.  And I run LibreOffice as my office suite, a recent change from Oracle's Open Office..  Blender 3D and GIMP and Inkscape and Audacity.

My semi-hacking editors are Notepad and Notepad+ and a few linux programming Languages ported to windows such as Bloodshed C++, GIMP and GIT, Handbrake Hydrogen, JustBASIC,  Lua , LuaEDIT, NetBeans, OpenWatcom C and C++, Panda3D, PyQT and Python and Ruby and SciLAB.

I guess you could say, I Like Choices.
