Apple Sells 3 Million iPads: What It Means

But no single tablet maker is doing 

nearly as well as Apple.

Research In Motion, for example, has sold somewhere between 1 million and 1.25 million PlayBook tablets. Many of them were sold for less than the original $499 price. In fact, the PlayBook's price has been closer to

$199 since September. Motorola has sold about 1 million Xoom tablets, based on its 2011 full-year financial statement. Add RIM and Motorola together, and the two combined might have moved 2.25 to 2.5 million

tablets over the course of an entire year.

Samsung is believed to have sold more than one million of its Galaxy Tab tablets. Samsung admitted, however, that it is flailing with its spate of slates. "Honestly, we're not doing very well in the tablet market," Hankil Yoon, a Samsung executive, told a group of reporters last month.

CUPERTINO, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Apple (AAPL_) will hold a conference call to discuss its cash balance before market open on Monday, a move that has fueled expectations that the tech giant will start paying a dividend again.

  

TheStreet will be live-blogging Apple's call, which starts at 9 a.m. ET.

The iPhone maker stopped paying a dividend in 1995, but CEO Tim Cook has recently hinted that Apple may rethink this strategy. Cook said last year that he was "not religious" about holding Apple's cash, which kicked off speculation that a dividend or share-buyback could materialize.

Apple, which recently unveiled its new iPad, had a cash hoard of almost $98 billion at the end of its recent fiscal first quarter. Some $64 billion of the company's cash is offshore, according to Apple.

Apple has not implemented any safeties for displayed content: the PDFs in GoodReader and the graphics even in premium games are being resized in the poorest possible way. While the newest version of the set-top box shares form-factor and many of the same features as its predecessor, it adds an updated processor, 1080p video streaming and iCloud support.
