MC2 Post 1848 Windows Research Shows Off a Keyboard that thinks it's a Tablet

From:   http://www.wpcentral.com

Microsoft Research has posted a report, as well as the video above, about their prototype for a new, gesture-reading, mechanical keyboard. The prototype, built using the keys of an Apple wireless keyboard (oh, irony, sweet sweet irony), uses a low-resolution matrix of infrared sensors placed between the keys to detect gestures, such as swiping and pinch-to-zoom, on the keyboard.

This achieves an effect similar to the new Touch Cover 2 for the Surface 2 tablets, though the prototype goes a step further, reading gestures taking place above the keyboard instead of sensing you brushing your fingers over its surface.

Microsoft Xbox Struggles in Big Hollywood Foray

Last May, when filmmaker Steven Spielberg announced he would create a television series based on Halo, it was a defining moment for Microsoft, the owner of the
$4-billion-dollar science-fiction game franchise.

The commitment by the director of “Jurassic Park” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” signaled the arrival of Hollywood-caliber original entertainment on Microsoft’s next-generation game console, the Xbox One.

On Monday, Xbox Entertainment Studios chief Nancy Tellem will once again tout the “Halo” TV series in a presentation to advertisers and media buyers in New York City as part of the digital media Newfronts.

But she will have little else to show of this marquee property some 12 months later. In a preview to the press, she offered no video teaser, no definitive timeline or even an update on its progress.

MC2 Post 1846 Hot coffee 'entanglements' and the arrow of time

Propeller Hats please....

A New Quantum Theory stirs up an old idea

about entanglements

From:   http://www.wired.com

This very interesting article on Wired presents some New Interesting ideas (theories) about quantum mechanics, entanglement and something they like to call:  'the arrow of time'.

In essence, it questions why coffee gets 'colder' over time
instead of getting hotter.  The 'physics' point to
the possibility that it 'could' go either way'.

So why doesn't it?

Yeah, it's out there, but I find it quite interesting
and well written article on Wired.

P.S.  The supporting math is Not There Yet, but they are working on it.

MC2 Post 1845 How to Protect Your Secrets From Nosey Android Apps

Out in the Open: How to Protect Your Secrets

From Nosey Android Apps

From:   http://www.wired.com

When you install an app on your phone, it often spreads its tentacles into other various parts of the device. Sometimes, it taps into the hardware that identifies your location. Others, it grabs data from your address book.

If you use an Android phone, the OS will tell you — explicitly — what the app is trying to access, and it will ask your permission to do so. But you can’t provide permission for one data grab and then reject another. It’s an all-or-nothing proposition. If you want the Twitter app but don’t want it accessing your text messages, you’re out of luck.

Reports: FCC Poised For Changes To Net Neutrality Policy

This post was updated at 12:10 a.m. ET on Thursday. See update below for details.

The Federal Communications Commission is getting ready to propose new rules when it comes to net neutrality, and are reporting based on unnamed sources.

Late Wednesday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler called the reports of a turnaround "."

According to the Times and the Journal, the FCC is planning to allow Internet service providers to sell a faster pipe into people's homes to content companies willing to pay for it. In other words, content providers could pay for preferential treatment into American homes.

MC2 Post 1844 Is The OnePlus One smartphone a $299 Nexus Killer ???

From:   http://www.theverge.com

OnePlus, the startup founded by former Oppo VP Pete Lau,
has unveiled its first smartphone, the OnePlus One.

It's a powerful effort, with a 2.5GHz
Snapdragon 801 processor,

a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 3GB of RAM,
a 13-megapixel f/2 camera unit,
and bottom-facing stereo speakers

Game Boy:

25 Things We Forgot About Game Boy on

Its 25th Anniversary

From:   http://abcnews.go.com

Twenty five years ago today, Nintendo released its first Game Boy in Japan.

Later, the device came to the U.S., delighting teenagers
and adults (even "Friends" actress Lisa Kudrow said she never
left home without hers back in 2000).

Here are 25 facts that will bring you back to 1989:

1.

Launched April 21, 1989 in Japan.

Game Boy was released only four years

after the launch of Nintendo Entertainment

System, introduced in 1985, eventually bringing hits

like Mario and Zelda into homes for the first time.

23.

You can "play" Game Boy games on your iPhone or iPad.

The "best" Game Boy Advance emulator for iOS was released in February, according to CNET, but it’s not a product endorsed by Nintendo.

24.

Or you can download apps that simulate the nostalgic Game Boy experience.

... with a similar mono-color experience, like a Video Games Quiz. Again, this is not a product created or licensed by Nintendo.

25."Game Boy" on Android

"My Boy!" is an app available created by a Game Boy fan in the Android Play

Store that is free. It's described as a "super-fast emulator
to run Game Boy Advance games on the broadest range of Android devices..."

MC2 Post 1843 Apple Marks Earth Day 2014 with Tim Cook “Better” Eco-Video

From:   http://www.slashgear.com

Apple has relaunched its Environmental Responsibility hub on Earth Day 2014, renewing attention on its materials selection, the impact of climate change, and how it is sourcing energy for new projects like the Yerington, Nevada data center from solar farms. The company also has a new video, filmed at different Apple locations around the world and narrated by CEO Tim Cook, in which the chief exec discusses the "big responsibility to leave a smaller footprint."

Focusing on clean production and carbon emissions has long been a factor in Apple's launches, and at most of the company's events where new hardware is launched, there's invariably a short section on how it ticks the boxes for avoiding things like arsenic in glass and lead solder.

Apple is also building a solar facility that will power its new manufacturing plant in Arizona.

Google Earth Day 2014  Doodle.

Japanese Macaques and Rufous hummingbird inhabit Earth Day 2014 Google Doodle

Google Doodle of Earth Day 2014 Photograph: /Google

Earth Day, marked annually by Google with one of its famous doodles, has been given a beatific and celebratory treatment by the internet giant today.

In the place of last year's depiction of the hydrological cycle and 2012's flowers, this year's doodle is half a dozen animated illustrations of species, from the photographer's favourite, the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), to the Rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), a small bird found mostly on the west coast of the US.

Also featured are the puffer fish, dung beetle, veiled chameleon and moon jellyfish. The collection appear to be chosen on the basis of being inspirational or beautiful rather than being endangered; Google's doodle is accompanied by a photo-sharing initiative on Google+ called #MyBeautifulEarth.

This year is the 44th anniversary of Earth Day, which was started in the US. It was the creation in large part of Gaylord Nelson, a US senator and Democrat, who died in 2005.

It is designed to "[activate] individuals and organizations to strengthen the collective fight against man's exploitive relationship with the planet."

The Earth Day website this year says that:

Our planet is at a turning point. The massive global migration underway now from countryside to cities will demand huge investments in energy, water, materials, waste, food distribution, and transportation over the next 25 years. If the right investments are made now, this unique opportunity will be the catalyst for dramatic changes in the built environment and the fight against carbon emissions and climate change.

This year's anniversary follows a trilogy of recent major reports from the UN's climate science panel, the last of which concluded earlier this month that the cheapest and least risky route to dealing with global warming is to abandon all dirty fossil fuels in coming decades.
