Update: Citing a "350 percent" growth in its video streaming service, Amazon unveiled its own streaming media device on Wednesday: Amazon Fire TV. The small set-top box will let Amazon compete with Apple TV, Roku, and ChromeCast in the hardware battle over TV streaming services. The fireTV will include a voice-activated search and (as anticipated by many), can double as a gaming console. The Fire TV will cost $99, or the same as Apple TV. It's available to ship today.

The three things Amazon thinks are weak on other streaming devices? Search, slow performance, and a closed ecosystem of available streaming services on the device. "It drives me bananas that I can't watch my Prime Instant Video on my Apple TV," Larsen added.

 

Presumably, Amazon sees Fire TV as a solution to those problems with other devices. As of now, the apps on Fire TV  include Netlifx, Hulu, WatchESPN, MLB, Crackle, MLB, Vimeo, NBA, and YouTube, according to the Verge. And, Larsen claimed in his presentation that the device is three times as fast as its competitors. The interface, demoed by Larsen, is pretty simple but peppered with things like "ASAP," which seems to be a feature that predicts what you might want to watch next. Fire TV's voice activated search will use the small remote that comes with the box. Amazon is touting it as a solution to the clunky search capabilities of competing streaming devices.

If Microsoft’s talk last week was about how it would bring Office and other key products to things other than Windows, this week’s Build conference is all about how Microsoft aims to make Windows itself more appealing to developers and customers.



 

Microsoft is expected to talk in more detail about spring updates for Windows and Windows Phone that it first said were coming at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.The event kicks off with a keynote around 8:30 am PT and Re/code will have live coverage and analysis.

For longtime followers of this star-crossed franchise, which saw Kendrys Morales mangle his left leg while jumping into home plate to celebrate a walk-off homer and Mo Vaughn sprain his ankle when he tumbled into the first base dugout in pursuit of a foul pop in his first game as an Angel, this could mean only one thing:



A bad omen.

Google’s Public DNS intercepted in Turkey

We have received several credible reports and confirmed with our own research that Google’s Domain Name System (DNS) service has been intercepted by most Turkish ISPs 

                               (Internet Service Providers).

 

A DNS server tells your computer the address of a server it’s looking for, in the same way that you might look up a phone number in a phone book. Google operates DNS servers because we believe that you should be able to quickly and securely make your way to whatever host you’re looking for,

                           be it YouTube, Twitter, or any other.

 

But imagine if someone had changed out your phone book with another one, which looks pretty much the same as before, except that the listings for a few people showed the wrong phone number. That’s essentially what’s happened: 

Turkish ISPs have set up servers that 

masquerade as Google’s DNS service.

Citi Fails Fed Stress Test ..... (again.)

The Federal Reserve dealt an embarrassing blow to Citigroup on Wednesday, attacking the bank’s financial projections for its sprawling operations and denying the bank’s plan to increase dividends and repurchase stock.

In a report, the Fed rejected Citigroup’s plans to manage its capital, citing concerns about the “overall reliability of Citigroup’s capital planning process.” It was the only one of the nation’s top five banks that failed to persuade the Fed to bless its plans for shareholder payouts.

 

The Fed did not give many details behind its rejection, which was the second denial of Citigroup’s capital plan in the past three years. But analysts and investors said the message 

from the regulator was clear.
