4 Even Apple Can't Keep a Good Hacker Down

In It's efforts to stop use of Snow Leopard on Intel (Atom) based

netbooks (which include Dell Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, EEE and

Lenovo, Apple's recent upgrade (10.6.2)have Locked them Out. One of the designers who simplified the Hackintosh mod into a

user-friendly installer was on the case immediately and offered a quick

fix.

In addition, he stated that a full-blown fix will be available in "a few weeks" -- barely enough time for Apple to enjoy its "silver bullet."

As incredible as the speed and diligence of the hacker community is, even more astounding is

the notion that companies are able to fully control how their products are run once they're

sold. No matter how many safeguards and legal threats a company makes, a little intuitive

tinkering will always make short work of them. Preventative measures are simply a waste of

valuable time and resources.

Open source projects like Google's (GOOG) Android platform,

Mozilla Firefox, WordPress, and Linux

already know this.

A company called Saygus, and its shiny

new QWERTY slider, the VPhone.

--- it's a product of the carrier's Open Development initiative. Sure

enough, that handset we spied a few days back is real, and the specs are

all panning out: 624MHz PXA310 XScale core, 512MB of Flash on board coupled with 256MB of RAM, 3.5-inch capacitive WVGA

touchscreen, WiFi, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, front-facing VGA

camera and -- of course -- EV-DO Rev. A support. The current incarnation is running Android 1.6, but it should be running 2.0 by the

time of its launch next year, along with getting some Google-

certification to let it run the Google apps. Saygus' real thrust here is apparently two-way video calling (good thing they picked Verizon,

huh?), though they aren't showing it off just yet.
