MC2 Post 1178 Scientist Have to Deal with the Darndest Things

Scientists Delay Redefining Time

Scientists have decided to postpone the decision to redefine the world’s time scale, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and abolish leap seconds for at least 3 years.

It will be another 3 years before scientists decide to redefine time.

No consensus

Scientists who attended the World Radiocommunication Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, could not agree on the future of leap seconds, so they will meet again in 2015 to decide on the matter.

MC2 Post 1177 Clean Up on Aisle 4 ____The SuperBowl Aisle

Oh My, There's a person under that fallen

The Marketing of the Super Bowl Begins, so be careful walking through your local supermarket.

How to Advertise Like a Pro on
Super Bowl Sunday

Chances are your small business doesn't have $3.5 million lying around to buy a 30 second commercial spot that will run during this year's Super Bowl, but that doesn't mean you can't advertise like the big boys on Super Sunday. That is because, according to Seethu Seetharaman, a marketing professor at Olin Business School, television ads during the Super Bowl are an overrated and overpriced way for companies to advertise. Small businesses, he said, can get an equal if not better return simply by being creative.

MC2 is transcribing The Talk of the Tech Town

It's Not All Newton Minnow's

Vast Wasteland.

Yet.

The signal-to-noise ratio in media has gotten pretty bad lately.

But there are islands in the flotsam worth hearing about.

At least, I still believe there is.  I have to, because current televised media is fast becoming another technical dinosaur
to relevance.

And just like lemmings, Media following the
newspapers over the edge.

Amazon Reportedly Mulls
Standalone Streaming Video Service

Amazon is considering breaking out its video streaming operation as a standalone subscription-based service, the New York Post reports, citing “industry sources.”  Such a move would make the company a head-to-head competitor with Netflix.

Ubuntu moves beyond the desktop with new TV interface, menu-killing navigation system

===================================

Ubuntu's HUD
New interface design

While the announcement of Ubuntu TV definitely has a certain flash appeal to it, a new display interface deserves just as much attention. Canonical’s Mark Shuttleworth recently blogged about the change, called the Head-up Display (or HUD) that does away with the menu and tries to better reflect how the human brain works.

Ten... smart TVs

LG Infinia 50PZ950T

LG a plasma but with THX 3D certification, deep picture tuning and a bucket-load of features, its relatively affordable PZ9 Infinia Series demands serious attention
This 50-incher is particularly beguiling. As LG can’t graft its Passive 3D screen filter onto PDPs, this model offers Active Shutter 3D, which works well. The set can also record to external USB.

LG’s Smart TV portal is well-stocked with IPTV (catch-up from the Beeb, YouTube, Acetrax, yadda yadda ya) and there’s a rich seam of time-wasting apps to mine.  Media streaming is very good from both USB and across a LAN. The TV’s MediaLink service also supports the Plex media server PC client.

Google rolled out its latest version of Google Earth on Thursday. Calling it
“the most beautiful Google Earth yet,” the update has managed to eliminate the “patchy” look of some of its images and now presents users with a more realistic depiction of how our planet really looks from up high.

MC2 Post 1175 HP Gives Timetable for Open WebOS

From: The Land of Linux and:  http://www.h-online.com

Yes I was on the waiting list for a

HP Touch Tablet for $99 bucks.

And Yes it was running WebOS,
which at the time I felt I could replace
with either some Android variant
or at least Linux.

That of course fell appart with
all the HP missteps and the CEO snafu.
But the hardware was good enough.

Well now it seems some of the good ideas
in WebOS have been incorporated
in Android's Ice Cream Sandwich
and even Windows 7/8 phones.

So it May Be Worth another Look.

Wingman.

HP has disclosed its plans for releasing webOS as open source with a timetable that results in open WebOS 1.0 appearing in September. The process will see elements of the WebOS system being released each month until August, when those elements will be brought together to make the Open webOS beta. A month after that, the company will then make a full release of Open webOS 1.0.

Why is Obama Going on a Visit to Arizona?

From:  http://news.cnet.com

On Wednesday, President Obama
is due to visit an
Intel plant in Arizona.
Here's why.

In Chandler, Intel will make its next generation of 14-nanometer (nm) processors that will be its most highly-integrated and power-efficient to date. Those chips--many of them a so-called SoC or system-on-a-chip--will power future ultrabooks, tablets, and smartphones.

And an often overlooked aspect of Intel's manufacturing might is its strategic relationship with Boise, Idaho-based Micron Technology. Those two companies formed Intel Micron Flash Technologies (IMFT) in 2006 and operate two U.S. plants, one in Utah and another in Virginia.

From:  http://www.newscientist.com

Impossible Reactions: Five Chemistry Rules Broken

Chemistry is a messy business. The elements are so diverse that their interactions can be unpredictable and sometimes bizarre. Often, chemists rely on nothing more than intuition to tell them what may or may not be possible.

Sometimes that leads them astray. History is littered with ideas that were derided or dismissed at first, but eventually changed the rules of the game. Philip Ball tells five stories of chemistry they said could never happen

MIT Genius Stuffs 100 Processors Into Single Chip

From:  http://www.wired.com

WESTBOROUGH, Massachusetts — Call Anant Agarwal’s work crazy, and you’ve made him a happy man.

His latest commercial venture is Tilera. The company’s specialty is squeezing cores onto chips — lots of cores. A core is a processor, the part of a computer chip that runs software and crunches data. Today’s high-end computer chips have as many as 16 cores. But Tilera’s top-of-the-line chip has 100.

Microsoft mandating Secure Boot on ARM, making Linux installs difficult

With Windows 8 coming out later this year, there has already been controversy about whether computers that ship with Windows 8 will have the ability to run Linux, either as a replacement for Windows or in a dual-boot setup. As we've reported, a process called UEFI secure booting prevents the booting of operating systems not signed by a trusted Certificate Authority—and hardware makers must enable the secure boot technology to qualify for a Designed for Windows 8 logo.

Is the Linux Desktop actually growing?

I don't think so.

Wingman.
===================================

First reported by Katherine Noyes on Linux Insider, it turns out that the Web research firm Net Applications’ data show that Linux’s desktop market share has been growing , from a mere 0.97 percent in July, 2011 to a new high of 1.41 percent in January, 2012.

As a Linux lover, this is good news, but it’s also odd news. GNOME, long the desktop interface darling of many Linux desktop users, lost many of its fan with its 3.x revision.  Ubuntu, long the most popular Linux desktop, changed to a new interface, Unity, in April 2011 and many people hate the new Unity desktop.

Mint Linux, which recently surged to the top of mind for Linux desktop users, has kept its fans, but now it’s also changing its desktop interface. With its users turning up their noses at GNOME 3.2, it’s now creating its own GNOME 3.x shell: Cinnamon.
